Most religions that have a hell teach that taking a life to save anothers life (self defense) is acceptable and will not condemn those that are faced with that hard choice. Of course there is that little fact that there is no hell but that is a different argument entirely.
Edit: Does a person who kills the person who killed a cop go to hell? Or even jail for that matter. That happened here in NH on Friday evening.

Shooting somebody in self defense isn't actually murder. Not if your protecting yourself or others. And Cops go through the routine everyday. But they also do something a lot of us do NOT do and that's put themselves in danger day in and day out. So no I don't think an Officer of the Law would go to "hell" for having killed to save someones life.

The Police Officers will not go to hell, because they live in it every time they are on duty. Every day, they endure sheer hell. A Police Office lives with threats and death, while on patrol and duty. These people that they have had to battle with , are out to kill or maim our Law men/women. They endure total dis-respect from the citizens that they are confronted with. Police Officers are living in Hell. Your question needs to be fully explained to this little kid. You need to tell him/her that our Police Officers are good and only want to protect him/her from people who kill and get killed. Our Police Officers are trying to up-hold the Laws of this land. God's Laws are for all of us people. Police Officers are servants of God. They carry out His Laws. Please tell this little kid that. Help him to think good thoughts about the Law Officers of this Country.

Well, considering hell, as a burning place of eternal torment does not exist, NO they don't.
But in terms of God's view of things, the Apostle Paul makes an interesting point in Romans 13: . 3 For those ruling are an object of fear, not to the good deed, but to the bad. Do you, then, want to have no fear of the authority? Keep doing good, and you will have praise from it; 4 for it is God’s minister to you for your good. But if you are doing what is bad, be in fear: for it is not without purpose that it bears the sword; for it is God’s minister, an avenger to express wrath upon the one practicing what is bad.
So secular authorities, which include their police forces are allowed to exist in their relative positions by God. That authority ... in this case given the cops... includes "bearng a sword" that can be used against the one practicing what is bad.
That said, God does not approve of killing.

It depends on if the fine for their sins has been paid by Jesus Christ. As law officers they should be familiar with fines and punishment for breaking the law. If a man has commited murder, just because he done good deeds in his life doesn't stop the punishment for the crime.

It's a great question. I know some Christians who refuse to be in the military and in the police because fo the command not to kill. They believe that they cannot win in those roles because failure to kill someone who is harmful to others may be failure to do their job.

They are only doing their jobs the same with soldiers . The people who go to hell are the ones who don't trust and believe in Jesus as their savior .

As a Buddhist, I'd say that if any police officer uses their position, in any way, to cause harm and intentional suffering, then yes, they'll certainly take rebirth in a hell realm or somesuch... otherwise, if their deeds are all free of harmful intent and virtuous then no.

I think while they may have killed, it wasn't malicious, same as if you were a solider. They were doing their job, protecting people.
Of course, if there's a hell, that's another story.
