My boyfriends ex wife wants to take their daughters puppy for obedience training.
The daughter doesn't live with us but the puppy does.
The X refuses to have the dog at her house so the daughter sees the pup when she visits my boyfriends house.
If the daughter doesn't live with the dog how can she reinforce what's been learned at obedience school?
If my boyfriend and I reinforce the training then it really won't be the daughter's dog ...will it?
Why would the X want to pay for obedience training for the puppy that she won't allow to live with her daughter?
It doesn't make sense to me.
My boyfriend and I have two very well behaved dogs that we've worked with ourselves - so what's the big deal with the training?

neither me or my boyfriend will be able to go to the training with the daughter - only the X is taking her and the dog - and then bringing just the dog back to our house.

Forget all the boyfriend/daughter/exwife/ and who lives where for whatever reason. The puppy needs obedience training and there isn't any question about that. But, obedience training is really for the dog owner more than it is for the dog. It teaches the owner about dog behavior and how to teach a dog basic commands. It also give you the skills to correct future behavior problems. It is simple: the person that will be with the dog most of the time is the one that needs this training.

Let the dog go to obedience training and have whomever accompanies the dog teach you or your daughter the commands.

Anyone who frequently visits the dog or lives with it should learn the commands anyways.

PS-- You shouldn't turn it into an issue with the ex. Just keep the peace. It will be good for the dog and your daughter in the long run.

I wouldn't turn down free obedience training. I mean, I doubt her motives for offering it are sinister... maybe she is trying to teach her daughter responsibility and follow-through or something...

If it is the daughter's dog, she should accompany it to the training. You or your boyfriend could go with her, so that you can reinforce the training when she isn't there. It would also be a great bonding opportunity.

just tell the mom okay it is not the daughter's dog it is ours. What can she say to that? If you do not want to take the dog to training, but if she wants to pay for it, and have the daughter take it, then why not? Or is it just the fact that you do not likeher telling or demanding something? I hate when people do that to me, but sometimes it is better to just try to get along, and just think about how much fun the daughter and puppy will have.

Be grateful!! The woman is trying to help out. The puppy will be (hopefully) well-behaved, and you and your boyfriend don't have to pay for it!

The next question is- "Who is going to be taking the dog to his/her lessons?".... although, if someone else were paying for the lessons, I'd find a way to take my dog!
