Lazy. I suppose it depends if they had opportunities to learn these things. If they did and refused to do it they are lazy. If not, then they should learn as soon as possible unless they plan on hiring someone to do it for them. If they think mom will do it, because she always has in the past, then it is time for mom to leave it up to them. They will learn to get it done eventually.

Well if none of them want to learn how to cook.. for the daughter..girl you better learn how to cook if you want to keep a man. For the son...Women Loves when a man knows how to cook...
As for the both of them you better learn now while you can in the long run it will catch up with you.(Laundry)

Hi,
from seeing the youngsters that live around me I would suggest they are perfectly normal!
However, not all children grow up without these necessary life skills. I would think that you have just not trained them properly. If children are encouraged at a young age to do things for themselves they will find it easier to do them when they are in their late teens (or any other age!)
I started cooking, taught by my mother, when I was five years old. By the time I was 9 or 10 I had taken over the mantle of 'chief pastry cook' and my mother rarely made any kind of pastry thereafter. It was just I developed the skill and was better than her at that one. I was also expected to clean my room, change my own bedclothes etc.
My own children learned to cook, clean, wash clothes, press them and generally look after themselves very well. They didn't feel deprived or oppressed, it was just that we all shared the work. If you follow your children around, waiting on them hand and foot, how can you complain when they don't want to get up off their backsides and cater for themselves?
Set ground rules...give each of them jobs to do, and don't 'give in' if they fail to carry out their chores. After all, that is what household tasks are...chores. If you do everything for them, they don't need to learn.
Explain to your children that you need them to help and how things will be...if they react badly, stop cooking for them, stop washing their clothes, don't clean their rooms (in fact NEVER clean their rooms!) They'll soon learn that iif they want to eat they'd better learn how to cook, and so on.
Don't be a slave or a martyr...get some time back for yourself and train and encourage your children to have some pride and independence.
Cheers,
BobSpain

Spoiled. When I was eight, my parents told me that I had to learn how to do my own laundry and cook my own food. I learned, and now, whenever I go to camp, I'm the responsible one that everyone wants in their tent.

Disabled. My son is 22 and has problems with real life things too. It's not that they can't learn, it's that they can't learn the same way as we do. Seek mental health care for them.
