The S&W M&P is the most reliable out of the two...they factory test it to the extreme with two full mag. One mag for speed test and the second is for the accuracy test. They are very very well made and pretty much just like a glock or a XD with all internal safties that allow you to pull and shoot.

Some of the other posters have some good points but the most important opinon is yours. It will be your gun so the best thing I can tell you is (if you can rent or borrow the same/similar weapons) is to get a few boxes of not too expensive, not too cheap ammo and shoot both of them. THEN MAKE YOUR DECISION.
For example... My wife wanted a pistol. So we went a looked at some, she held a Ruger and a S&W Sigma .40. She had a Ruger (P series) before but liked the Sigma so she bought it. After shooting it a few times, I recommended that she shoot something different because watching/coaching her shooting, the gun did not look too comfortable for her to shoot (small hands). We rented a Glock 23 and after shooting that, she wanted a Glock. She got one and loves it. I like it too, and I have Kimber .45 and a Taurus PT101 (.40S&W). I am deadly with my pistols but her Glock is such a nice gun to shoot, and very comfortable for me- a guy who likes full sized frames and guns made of steel.
I can't deny that the Glock is a good gun, but I have my preferences.
( I am not pushing Glocks, just making a point about how it may seem OK now, but after a few boxes of ammo, you may either love the particular gun, or hate it.)
If you are looking for a carry weapon, the PT92 may become a little cumbersome but Taurus makes a good gun as I have owned a few over the years. Smith also makes a good gun. Both have lifetime warranties and both are well developed designs.

So, to "not" answer your question, consider my advice and go from there.

Good luck.

I haven't handled or shot one of the new S&W 9mmP M&P's so I really can't address them.

However, I used to have a Taurus PT-92, it was an old model gun with a heel mounted magazine release.

It was one straight shooting son-of-a-gun!

And the most polite autopistol I've ever seen. If I stood still to shoot, it would dump all the empty brass in a pretty small pile. It got to the point that I'd put down a piece of newspaper in the landing zone and most of the empties would land on the paper and the rest would be near by.

Accuracy was good, not matchgrade, but good for a service automatic. Reliability was 100%. It fed everything from 90 gr. JHP's to 124 gr. FMJ, to 147 gr. JHP's with nary a bobble. The only thing I tried to get it to feed without succes was an empty cartridge case.

Needless to say, I like the Taurus PT-92.

The Smith & Wesson M&P is a world class handgun, and between the two choices, I would select it over the Taurus in a heartbeat. I'd even pick it over the glocks, springfield xd, or the beretta.

I'd really go with the M&P if this is an issue of a toss-up and you like both. It is made in the USA and has a "wear-ever" frame. It's a no worry gun that is super-durable and it has good accuracy based on reports. The Beretta would be good for random plinking or as a secondary gun down the road.

I place value on taurus by whatever the local salvage yard is paying in scrap weight. Fortunately taurus tend to be heavy.

Several good answers here. However, no one has mentioned that Taurus has a LIFETIME warranty. If you have any problem withe the 92, Taurus will fix it. Even if you are buying it used.

I would go with the S&W or Springfield Armory XD9 Stay away from the Taurus, even with the warranty I have seen too many failures on the range

I like my S&W 910, 915, 930
(same firearm, depends on what size magazine I put in it)
No matter what size mag, it's well balanced.
