If I want to phone the police to report noisy neighbours late at night (ie: now) is it best to call the local station or 999?

Cheers folks. Its a bunch of pissed up 16 year olds who are round EVERY weekend cos the junkie father leaves them an empty flat every Fri, Sat and Sun night. I had a feeling 999 (NOT 911...surprise surpise Americans who suggested that, there are other countries in the world you know?!) might be a bit extreme.

If it's regular and really getting you down, call 999 and mention the magic words 'behaviour likely to lead to a breach of the peace'. They'll be there like a shot because it's something they can clear up straight away and will improve their clear-up statistics.

If this is a regular occurence look in your phone book for your local council services and get the number for environmental health. Thats what I did, they log your call and can come out and put a noise monitor in your house.
When I went through this situation we were also given mediators and enforcement officers. My ex neighbour went away for the weekend and left radio on in back bedroom, telly on in front room and front bedroom and a stereo on in the kitchen, all very loud, and that was only one of the things he did.

The outcomes can be different depending on if you and neighbour are homeowners or council tenants.

I was a council tenant and my neighbour was a homeowner. The enforcement officers secured me a new house in a very nice area, but this was after putting up with all sorts of crap from the neighbour.

Advice to you is keep a diary of all times and dates, as this is what they will want you to do, so get a head start.

Good Luck.

It is not an emergency so contact the local police number rather than emergency. In my opinion, it is more ethical and neighborly to try to speak to the noisy neighbors directly- phone or in person. They may not realize that they are bothering anyone. If you try to contact the police, and they do not do anything, perhaps you should document that you tried to get them to help you, mark the time and what was said in the conversation. If the police are repeatedly incompitent then this will help build a case.

Good luck and I hope you find peace (and quiet!) with your neughbors!

i have had this problem happening, i called 911 and they said they will send an officer there, the guy came and knocked on the door and they stopped, i suggest call your local office and if that don't work, call 911....

911 is just not about life emergency, they can contact the police, faster, if you call a office number, chance are they are prob close and can't do anything about it.

First of all, I am an American, but don't let that bother you. You see, we are experts in annoying and offending people. I think I can help you...

If you are a Do-It-Yourselfer (DITY) like me, you handle these matters on your own. The American police are useless, and perhaps yours are as well. After a few calls from you, they think YOU are the troublemaker for making them get off their fat asses to do their job. Anyhow...

Get a couple of male friends to make loud sex noises during your neighbors' sleepytime, and do it often...

Get a hold of some car speakers, like some 15-inch woofers in a bass-box, and put it near their wall. Play an ultra-low droning bass sound that isn't heard as much as it is felt, like felt inside the body...

Get some earplugs and intentionally set-off your smoke detector for 15 minutes each day...

Hook-up a car battery to your doorknob. Before doing so, wet the outside knob and make sure a puddle is present outside the door, like after a storm. Make enough noise to piss them off enough to come over and knock. Look through the peephole. When you have verified its them, say "COME IN!"...

My favorite: Get a glass jar, and find as many cockroaches as you can. Introduce them into the house somehow. Tell them your toilet is broken and you need to use theirs. Once you are in their bathroom, uncap the jar and dump the roaches under their bathroom sink.

That's all for now, gotta go eat.

your local police station would be best, they have to go round the house, as they have to investigate every call, also keep a diary, time and dates, also if you can record the noise too, then go to your local council with it, they will get a asbo, hope that helps, i went through it, i won in the end, now they don't make a sound, all the best

if these people are in a council flat...you should contact your department of the enviroment. people are not allowed to cause noise nuisance.

the noise can be monitored by the council..and if it continues - these people can be evicted. noisy neighbours can ruin your life...so i would do something immediately.

dont call 999...you could be taking them away from somebody who is desperate for help.

ha ha you remind me of myself a few years back.... i had REALLY noisy neighbours and contacted the station as 999 is for emergencies and two officers got in touch about 3 days later i was told there wasn't anything they could do and to complain to environmental health who advised me to keep a diary of all the disturbances in the end i saw him go out one day and he didn't lock his door out of pure desperation i let myself in and cut his speaker wires and slept soundly that night ,that guy i later found out was a registered alcoholic receiving a wad of benefits each week this guy drank everyday took drugs and his flat was full of extravagant pieces of furniture all funded by the state !
