It may be the case that Adam and Eve are general characters. Here is why. The Hebrew meaning of Adam is 'man' or 'mankind'. There are 2 accounts of creation in Genesis. The first account seems to be an overview, thus Adam or 'mankind' was created on the 6th day. The specific amount, it does not say, but if one turns to the Adam in the second account one will find that the Adam is a bit more specific. This specificity shows that the Adam in the 2nd account is different from the one in the first. Due to this one may deduce that there were many people in the world at the time of Adam and Eve.

They did what God created them for, they were "fruitful and multiply, and fill up the world." Now that our DNA is marred, close breeding multiplies birth defects. Suppose that is why God prohibited incest about two millenniums after creation week.

They were NOT the only persons on this earth. Lucifer and his fallen angels were thrown out of the first heaven and mixed w/the beautiful people of the earth. They were destroyed by the flood. However, Adam and Eve were created in the image of God for the sole purpose of relationship w/God. But as we all know, they disobeyed and ruined the perfect life for us all.
