I have a toothache and won't be able to go to the Dentist until around July, when i'm back home and out of school. So, I take Ibuprofen quite often. It's actually my medicine of choice, for headaches which I get quite often, and any other aches and pains I might have. I never exceed the six tablet in 24 hours rule, but I do take them just about everyday. They are the only things I can find that alleviate the pain. Is it dangerous to take this everyday? Or not a problem? I follow directions at all time.

Not really dangerous. I had a doctor recommend a daily Advil to control minor arthritis. But I've read that it can be harmful to your stomach lining.

Ibuprofen is generally a safe drug, but it can have some nasty effects. As long as you keep an eye out for these and only take it short-term and when you need it, you should be fine. First of all, you should make sure you take the ibuprofen safely. You are able to take 1 or 2 tablets (of 200mg ibuprofen) every 6 hours. Don't take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours. Secondly, keep your eyes open for any of these side effects: rash, black faeces or blood in your faeces, unexplained or excessive bruising, or blood in your urine. If you experience any of these, see your doctor immediately. Thirdly, if possible, only take ibuprofen when it is really necessary, and try to keep it as a short-term solution. Try acetominophen (Tylenol) and see if that is enough to help the pain. You can take 1 or 2 tablets (500mg tablets) every 4 to 6 hours, no more than 8 tablets in 24 hours. If acetominophen really doesn't help, or 6 ibuprofen tablets per day isn't enough, see your doctor. They can write you a prescription for stronger pain relief.

It is probably okay, if you're only taking the recommended dose on the bottle. Doctors sometimes prescribe higher doses, but not for long-term use. Some people can get stomach ulcers or bleeding from taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) long term, but ibuprofen is considered the least hard on the stomach. If you have a history of kidney problems, don't take it long term without a doctor's advice. Also, while you're taking ibuprofen regularly, DO NOT take any other anti-inflammatories (aspirin, aleve/naproxen). They can interact and cause bleeding and other problems.

For best results with ibuprofen, take it very regularly -- if you take it as often as recommended on the bottle, you can prevent breakthrough pain. Ibuprofen has a cumulative effect -- it works best when there's a certain level of the drug in your system at all times.

A physiciains asst, told me the Prescription kind can be if you take it every day, every 4 hours for weeks or months straight. But the over the counter kind is safer and can be taken daily as needed, so long a you don't exceed the daily dose allowed.

However, I've been taken 800-1600 mg every 4 hours around the clock, sometimes for weeks at a time, for nearly 2 yrs, now. I haven't had a problem. My doctor moved, and I just went a couple weeks ago to see this new guy(PA), and when i asked for a refill, that's what he told me.

He said he would only prescribe it for two weeks and would have to check my blood before he will give me any more. and I've never had a problem. he said prescription form are more potent and and can cause kidney and liver problems.

When i asked my last Doctor 2 yrs ago, she told me that even with as much as i was taking, i was well under requirements listed in the books, she told me out of all them, asprin, tylenol, etc, that actually Ibuprophen was the safest, and since it is the only one that also has an anti-inflammitory in in to reduce any swelling, if has more benefits, compared to asprin and bleeding ulcers, and complications from extended use of tylenol

When i told this new guy what my last DR. said, he argued with me. he said if you want to take over the counter Ibuprophen, fine, but if you want anything stronger, you'll have to get a blood test first.

So if it's over the counter, i wouldn't worry about it, and if you get to hurting real bad, an extra one or even two isn't going to hurt. if I can take 1600mg prescription form every 4 hrs, what are over the counter ones, 200mg?

I'd also get some Night time Oragel, that got me through last time til I went to the dentist, like you, I had to wait 6 weeks first. Night time Oragel is thicker, more like a paste and it stays where you want it and works longer, and I had a pretty wicked toothache, but you have to put it directly where it hurts, and it numbs pretty much right away so you know whether you're getting it in the right place, unlike others I've tried.

Anyway, hope this helps and that you're tooth don't bother you too bad til then, seems like it's always the middle of the night when they go off. If it gets too bad before then, call them up and ask them if they've had any cancellations, sometimes they can get you in sooner this way. If not, ask them if they could please call you if they do. (Also, sometimes the Dentist will prescribe something stronger in the mean time),

Someone told me when my tooth was real bad at night, alls I had to do was go to the ER and they would give me something. (Which I wish I would've known that a couple of times, but then there's the bill) Knowing me I would've tried to stick it out. Any how, I just hate to see anybody in pain, you take care.

It can be a problem with your blood platelets. If you start getting random bruises, they are little, a bit smaller than a dime, you should stop immediately. Digestive problems can occur as well. Are you taking the Ibuprofen for the toothache? You say you take them everday, is it just the toothache, or do you have other issues, that may need addressed? Check to see if there is an agency in the city you reside, that offers free/reduced rates for dental emergencies. Being a college student, I would think info would be available on campus, for low income students. You don't want to ignore this, you may have an abcess, and the poison is constantly coursing your bloodstream, making your immune system weaker. Good luck.

What is the most important information I should know about ibuprofen?

Ibuprofen can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Do not use this medicine just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).
Ibuprofen may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. These conditions can occur without warning while you are using ibuprofen, especially in older adults.

Ibuprofen belongs to a family of medications known as The NSAIDs (non steriodal anti inflammatories).

Daily Ibuprofen use can result in peptic ulceration or bleeding , some people develop renal failure as well or kidney damage.

If it is the only medication that helps with your pain I would strongly suggest taking it only if you are physically in pain and to take it after eating or with a zantac to protect the stomach mucosa from ulcerating.

there are plenty of alternatives if you are in that much pain. Starting with tylenol and tylonel 3's and ending with narcotics.
You should also consider visiting the reason for your pain rather then just masking your symptoms with pain killers.

We have become a society that is too depnedant on medications.
