What matters is who far away the person is one wishes to contact. Imagine not knowing anyone past your city line. No cell phone, no way of contact, then how many people would you know? How long will it take you to walk from one side of your city to the other? Basically in the time of Jesus, individuals did not really know other people outside of their own known world. If a message needed to be sent via a distant relative messengers or letters would be the way the message would travel. There were trade routes along most cities and it seems these trade routes were probably the most common way of sending and recieving messages. I hope this helps.

They had many of the same things we have, mail, couriers, gossip (which moves like the wind). Some of their methods even have bearing on todays culture. For example when passover started as soon as the sun's last rays hit the horizon, a fire was started on a hill, and someone on a distant hill would see the fire they would start one and the message that Passover hadbegun would be spread out to all the Jewish people. The obvious problem of course was that it took two days for everyone to be notified and so today Passover is actually celebrated over a two day period in Judaism.

Years Ago, in Russia, some Christians were having underground Meetings (what we'd call "Going to church".
There was a counterfeit in the group. Spie.
The next meeting place was left to one Person, the Leader.
Everybody Else had to Pray to find out where the Meeting Place was agonning to be.
Everybody Showed up EXCEPT the Spie.
How's that for Communication!
GOD Almighty TALKS!
To HIS Kids!

They traveled long distances to spread their words. Throughout history, every religion has done that.
And they did a great job, look around you. The whole world is involved now.

News could travel by a few methods.
*Soldiers would move around spreading news
*Traders would serve as the media does today, diseminating stories from place to place
*Letters could be sent by messenger.

They either had to see them person themselves, or write a letter and have someone send it to them by foot, I suppose.
