We leave in the morning but my dad is still home sleeping. He doesn't get enough sleep. What should we do?

You need to first find out why your dog is barking.

A lot of dogs bark because they don't get enough exercise and they're just plain bored when they're left home alone - they're fully awake and have nothing to do. If you exercise for about 45 minutes prior to leaving for work in the morning, your dog will likely go and take a nap because he's gotten all of that energy out of his bones before spending the day home alone. You may also want to consider giving him something "to do" like providing him with a puzzle ball - it's a toy that you can put treats in, and he has to work to get them out. Or you can hide treats around the room for him to find.

Another reason dogs bark is separation anxiety. If giving more exercise and something to do doesn't work, you may want to explore that avenue further.

And a third reason is that he might be doing it to get some attention. What does your dad do when the dog's barking? Does he go out and pet the dog, or go and yell for the dog to be quiet? If he pays any attention to the dog (even if it's yelling "QUIET") your dog might see that as a "reward" for barking.

If your dog is suffering from separation anxiety, you can use a stationary bark control device. This little thing only goes off if the dog barks repeatedly, not just once or twice. You place it near where the dog is barking (like for mine it is the front door. It will emit a high pitched sound that only the dog can hear that the dog will find irritating, but it doesn't cause any real pain. They cost around $40. It worked well for my dog. I was getting complaints from the neighbors about her barking and had to do something or the apt management would have made me get rid of her. My other advice is to make sure that your dogs needs are being met. :)

How old is the dog, and has it and you had any obedience training? Obedience training is the first step to correcting any behavior problem. It gives you the knowledge and the techniques to correct behavior problems. I can give you step by step directions on how to teach your dog the "quiet" command but, you will not be all that successful with that if you don't already have a dog that knows how to learn and you how to teach. Dogs that are obedience trained make so much better and safer pets. Never use a spray bottle on your dog. This is aversion training and only trains a dog to fear you.

Scold your dog gently when he/she is barking, and if your dog is barking squeak his/her favorite squeaky toy and praise the dog when he/she comes in to get the toy.
