do you think the sages spoke of humility, compassion, moderation, and selflessness because they wanted to trick people into being " good " people, or is there something to be gained from this path in life?

I think there is a great deal to be gained from being humble, compassionate, moderate and selfless. It can also be taken to extremes (well, OK, maybe moderation cannot be taken to extremes), to where a person becomes a burden on others in their selflessness. In order to do good in this world, you must be sufficiently healthy and prosperous to have something to give, whether in time or money.

Not sure who you mean by sages. Still, the qualities that you mention are those which lead to a fruitful life. It's not a matter of trickery, but simply a way of life that promotes wisdom and justice.
