My husband and I are taking a much needed break this weekend to celebrate that he is almost in complete remission. People have told me to just ak for a free upgrade but, I am not the type to just ask for something like that (I won't even sneak into another movie at the theatre because I'm afraid to get caught). Anyway, why would they give me a bigger room for free?

I stay in hotels a fair bit. I too tend not to ask, but have received upgrades. Sometimes impressive, sometimes I can't tell the difference from their normal room. Mostly for hotels I frequent a lot, and I am a member of their loyalty programs.

I hear that things like honeymoons can get you an upgrade. So it doesn't hurt to ask, and just don't ask, start with why you are there celebrating.

I have worked in the hospitality field for many years and it never hurts to ask. Explain why you are celebrating. Most places will upgrade you if they have the availability. If they don't have a room available when you call them, try asking when you go to check in. Sometimes they get cancellations or they didn't end up selling the room. They often don't like to give up rooms too far in advance if they know they could possibly make more money, but the chances of them selling the room the day you check in is pretty slim.
God bless you & your husband and best wishes on his remission.

Sneaking in for a movie is perfectly fine!
You can just say "I lost my ticket" LOL

Getting something free from someone you never met in your life. Now that is hard.

Goodluck on the room upgrade!

Sometimes, it wouldn't hurt to ask. My success rate is less than 25 percent because I usually book the cheapest rate unless they ran out of rooms for the rate I booked for.

I work in the hospitality field and YES ask, they may say no so don't be disappointed but most places want to please their guests and tell them the special occasion for your trip as well, that always gives a boost in getting that upgrade.
