I think we are helping them recruit by being in Iraq. If we tried to made friends with the Arabs in general (not the terrorists), but the moderates, I am sure they will have a hard time convincing people to rage Jihad.

If we look at Vietnam as an example an answer comes clear. We were told that if we didn't prevail in Vietnam (South Vietnam) all of Indo-China would go communist and be our enemies. We were told that the North Vietnamese didn't value life. We were told that the North Vietnamese were merciless killers and "terrorists." When the president of South Vietnam wanted to negotiate with North Vietnam, he was mysteriously assignated and a new leader more friendly to us was installed.
We spent billions upon billions of dollars and thousands upon thousands of American lives, destroyed much of the country and divided our own fighting that war . Finally, the American people had enough and forced our government to withdraw. Vietnam went through a period of chaotic reconstruction and years later, has emerged as one country and we are doing business with it - peacefully. Indo-China has not gone communist. The Vietnamese are content with their own country and are not sending out "terrorists" to fight us. All the fears have proved meaningless as we had said they were back at the time.

If we stop meddling in the affairs of the Middle East but let them take care fo their own business; treat Israel and Palistine as EQUALs and act to stop the cultural genicide going on there; sure, there will be chaos for a while. Iraq will either divide along sectarian lines ala India/Pakistan or resolve its differences and build a aunified government ala Lebanon. But the dust will settle and when it does, if we have let them construct their own government, and let them have their own culture, there will be no "terrorists" against us for there will be no reason for it and we will be doing business with them peacefully.

Pretty simplistic but correct nonetheless. No they will not follow us hear if we leave Iraq considering that 90% of the terrorist attacks don't come from "terrorist" groups let alone al Qaeda, but rather Iraqi's who have formed militias in order to attack America troops because they're fed up with our occupation, as well as attacking people of other Muslim sects.

The fact is that our intelligence and law enforcement efforts post 9/11 have produced far better results than the two wars we've fought. One of which has left an American backed government in Kabul under the protection of NATO that exercises no real power outside of that city, and has warlords exercising complete control in the various provinces, and is now suffering a Taliban resurgence due to too little troops in that country to combat them.

The other was completely a war of choice without much argument for necessity. Bush said at the beginning of his term that he was considering removing the sanctions and no fly zones from Iraq, and he had to think full well then that Iraq had wmd's. But only after 9/11 (an event that Iraq had nothing to do with), did he decide that not only was Iraq so dangerous that we couldn't remove the sanctions from him, but we also needed to go to war to overthrow him. This based entirely under one of the most hypothetical scenarios imaginable: Saddam Hussein would give a terror group a chemical or biological weapon to sneak into the United States (even though they believed for a long time he had those weapons, and the fact was is that he never gave any terror group one of these weapons. If he had them and wanted to hit us like that he would have done it a long time ago). This war was not only unsuccessful like Afghanistan, but it was far more costly, not just in terms of the money and lives, but also America's global standing which may be close to becoming irreparably damaged.

Yup, we turned more young Muslims onto terrorism than ever before by invading Iraq.

Bin Laden is probably pretty happy that we've helped fill his ranks. The man didn't even have to lift a finger to get all these new recruits.

Will people ever realize that Iraq doesn't have the monopoly on terrorists? They do live in other countries yanno..

So because we invaded Iraq, that keeps terrorists from attacking us? It makes ZERO sense. None. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

We're ever bit as vulnerable as we were pre-9/11. You can still smuggle things onto an airplane, our water supplies are not guarded, and anyone could put a nuclear weapon in a cargo box and ship it right into our major sea ports.

We have many ongoing efforts to make friends with the secularists and reformists (the good muslims) This happens in countries like Ethiopia, Pakistan, Turkey, a bunch of African nations, and some South asian areas. I think that they will follow us here though, as we can see by the recent Fort Dix attempt. The best thing we can do is secure the border.

And they are also infiltration some European nations as we speak, maybe not militarily, but politically, by trying to establish Shar'ia law in either Britain or Germany.

You are exactly right! By attacking Iraq we've made many more enemies than friends. And by reaching out to the rest of the Arab world instead of alienating them and treating them like enemies, we can repair the damages that Bush has caused.

You should check out Senator Gravel's campaign for the Presidency. He shares that view of things with the both of us. And he needs all the support he can get.

I believe in all seriousness, that they will come here.

An example is 911. They came here and blew up the planes in to the buildings.

I'm sure that you are right, we are probably lending them a helping hand in recruitment. The fact is making friends these days are not enough and definitely not the forte of our current administration.

You are 100% right there brother. All that talk about fighting their rather than here is just the administration saying "it is going to be a mess fixing our biggest mistake and we don't want to have to deal with it on our dime. We will go on misleading the dumb American public and hope the blame for the instability we have doomed the region to is blamed on someone else".

Unfortuantely the ones who commit terrorist acts are not rational people thats why you cannot work out an agreement with those types of people. Now that said, not all Arab/Islamic people are like that, the ones who are are very dangerous to us and those who would like to have peace etc...

That "fight them there instead of here" crap is so dumb. Like they won't come over here anyway. Are they all stuck in traffic in Baghdad or something? Is every single terrorist in the world pinned down under our crossfire or hiding in a spiderhole? Of course not.

If only we had a better UNDERSTANDING of the political and cultural nuances of the Middle East, we'd instantly know that this war isn't in the US's best interest.

But...

Since we are so IGNORANT and STUPID...?

It's going to take a generation for this country to stop leaping at things prematurely--assuming we survive the next ten years...
