I don't think it would progress to a Court Marshal, but it's possible I suppose.

You can get in trouble though. Especially if you are in to much pain to work, or have to be given bed-rest or hospitalization.

The way the military looks at it they provide sunscreen and other controls to minimize sunburn. If these didn't work, an investigation would take place, if you were in the wrong you can get in trouble.

Yes you can. It has to be a pretty bad one and you have to get it outside of normal duty. for example, you shouldn't get in trouble for a sunburn caused while standing gaurd in in the sun, but if you get one on liberty at the beach thats a whole different thing.(irresponsible)However, you are more likely to get an NJP out of it. It is called willful destruction of government property. If you are careful and don't let it affect your duties then you might get away with a light punsishment, couseling and a butt chewing. Bottom line is, they have probably trained you to always use sunscreen. And if you don't then maybe you are also violating a direct or lawful order.

I spent over 20 years in the Navy and have seen some bad sunburns. I was on liberty with a shipmate in Hawaii and constantly reminded him to come out of the water into the shade. He got such a bad burn, even wearing his boxers and t-shirt was painful. All he got was 2 days bed rest and a big chewing out by his chief.
Military personnel are NOT 'GOVERNMENT PROPERTY', I don't care what some lame brain, know nothing civilian says...or some boot know it all, barracks lawyer says.
I think being laughed at for being stupid enough to get a bad burn in the sun is enough punishment.

This is true. But they only go after you if the sunburn is so bad that you are unable to report for duty because of it. Although they can court martial you for it, usually it just ends up in a reprimand, or at worse an Article 15, which is a permanent black mark on your record. I have never heard of anyone getting dishonorably discharged over a sunburn.

Court martial? Perhaps not. But a friend who was in the National Guard was put on report for getting severe sunburn during operation deployment to Louisiana many years ago. This was because they were told to take precautions against sunburn, but he didn't, and then rolled up his pant legs in the heat and got very, very bad sunburn on his legs. Blisters, fever, the works.

Not because he was property, but for failure to obey orders.

But court martial? Sounds a bit drastic.

Moony is correct. When I was stationed in Pensacola in the 70s, several individuals received Article 15 punishment for being unable to perform their duties due to severe sunburn. Under the UCMJ, you can decline the Article 15 and request court-martial proceedings instead.

Yes, you could

I was also TYD at NAS Pensacola, Florida (1985) for Aircrew and SAR Swimmer school:

A student got a SEVERE sunburn and went to Captain's Mast (NJP) for the sunburn (he hadn't been drinking !!) the first week I was there !!

There were THREE more cases like that during the 3 months I was in P-cola... all went to Captain's Mast as "failure to obey a direct order" rather than "destruction of government property.

I doubt they'd court martial you. However they could/would Article 15 you. That is lost pay, extra duty and possible loss of rank.

Just like you can get into lots of trouble if your child gets severely sun burnt.

not a court martial but an NJP or nonjudicial punishment. basically if thru your own carlessness you render yourself unfit for duty such as failing to wear sunscreen while on liberty(freetime) and you get burned so bad that you cannot perform duty for a few days then yes. the same goes for giving yourself trench foot because its 100% preventable.

Technically speaking, its possible. But in reality, no they are not going to do that. You'd probably be sent to the TMC for some treatment if it was bad enough.
