IN GENESIS there are two contradictory stories of creation. In Genesis 1:20 & 21, "every living creature" is brought forth from the waters, including every winged fowl." But in 2:19 God brings forth "every beast of the field and every fowl of the air" from dry ground.
In Genesis 1:2, earth comes into existence on the first day, completely underwater. Only by the 3rd day were waters of the deep collected, and dry land formed. But in Genesis 2:4, 5, & 6, earth on the first day was dry land, unwatered.
The first story has trees made on the 3rd day and man formed 3 days later (1:12-13 and 26-31). In the second version man was made before trees (2:7, 9). If chapter 1 is true, then fowls were created before man. If chapter 2 is true, then they were created after man.
Version one teaches man was created after all beasts. The second is clear, Adam was created before beasts. (1:25,27 versus 2:7,19). If the Bible is Infallible which version is correct and why the need for two stories?

So those who see it as literal truth say the genesis story is up for "interpretation"? it was seen from a different "perspective"? I thought that ws anathema for "true believers"? it's either all right or all wrong, or does that naughty word "interpretation" come back into play, the one Fundamentalist's don't like. I not trying to be an ***, it's just that many people simply can't give me a straight answer or fall back on what others have told them. it's perfectly alright to not agree with Genesis and STILL have a deep belief in God.

Shhhhhhh. Your not supposed to notice that. If you do, you are supposed to pretend it is not there.

How in the world can they not be contradictory? They describe the same event but they say different things about it. That is the definition of contradiction! If I went to a concert with a friend and I said The Stones opened for Blue Oyster Cult and then my friend said Blue oyster cult opened for The Stones then one of us has the story wrong. There is no way for us both to be right. The same applies here. There is no way for both of these stories to be right. Therefore, one of them is wrong. Therefore, there is error in the bible.

Hi Geekirel. =) You'll notice that all of Genesis Chapter 1 thru Gen 2:4 is a summary of what happened on each figurative creation 'day' in order. You'll notice that Gen 2:5 doesn't start it all over- it simply goes back & fills in the details in between of exactly HOW all this took place. For example Gen 1:11-12 says when God created vegetation. Then in Gen 2:5-6 it explains more detail of HOW He did this. And so on. You'll notice in Chapter 1 that the animals AND Adam & Eve were all created on the same creation 'day'- the 6th 'day'. Chapter 2 fills in some of the in-between details of what was going on during the 6th creation day, as it did with the other 'days' & their corresponding creations. In Gen 2:18, the 'helper' that God was speaking of for Adam was that of a wife, Eve, not animals. This is made clear if you read the rest of the context in verses 19-23. It says that during that 'day' God was 'forming' the animals in vs 19 indicating that this was a continued progressive action during that 6th 'day', & that he was bringing him to Adam to name, & it was again mentioned he also needed a helper, etc- it doesn't say in these verses he was creating animals 'and then' he made Adam, it's just indicating that all of these things happened on that same 6th creation day together. These verses in chapter 2 are filling in the details of all that happened on that same 'day', not indicating a specific order that was done, as the order it was done was already made clear in Chapter 1. Great question, hope that helps. =)

The bible was written by a bunch of different people over a long period of time and then collected and edited into the books we have now.

You might also find it interesting that there are two versions of the Ten Commandments.

It is the same miracle and the same Creator no matter how it happened.

We do believe, though, that ultimately it was all created ex nihilo - called out of nothingness.
