From the aerobic classes I've taken, I've learned that "spot reducing" is a myth. That is, you can't exercise one area of the body and burn off the fat on top (so doing tons of crunches won't burn the fat off your belly, etc).

The body loses fat as a WHOLE, but it will look like you're losing fat from the face downwards. Your face will start to look thinner, then your belly will lose fat, etc. Women naturally store their fat in their hips and thighs, however, so that is the absolute LAST place we'll lose it from.

So, in answer to your question, you CAN'T specifically burn fat off your hips and thigs. You can tone the muscles there by doing leg lifts, squats, wall-sits, etc, but you can't get rid of the fat like that. The only way to lose the fat off your lower body is to do good cardio/aerobic exercise 3-5 times a week, for 30-60 mins each time, stimulating fat lose throughout your body. Eventually you'll be able to see it in your hips and thighs as well.

Get a heart rate monitor and do aerobic exercise. There is a certain range your heart rate has to be in to burn fat, and it's actually a LOWER heart rate than most people exercise at. If you have access to gym equipment, the stationery bikes and ski machines are good for the lower body. If not, fast walking or slow jogging will probably get your heart rate into the right range. It's important to monitor your heart rate because working out too hard is not as effective at burning fat, and it's usually so unenjoyable you won't want to repeat it on a regular basis. To see good results you should work out at least 30-45 minutes 3 to 4 times a week. There are charts online that can tell you the target heart rate for fat burning for your age group.

Do cardio exercises along with a pilates or stability ball dvd. I have a couple of work-out dvds that have 15 minute segments that each do a different area - abs, hips, thighs, butt, arms, etc. I really like "The method" dvd's, but there are tons of good ones on amazon. Good luck!

"Spot Reduction" is a fallacy. Women typically store fat in the hips and thighs, however in terms of getting rid of it, it does so proportionally throughout your body. Best thing to do? Weight train, Cardiovascular workouts, and dieting.

you can't spot reduce fat through diet or exercise. you have to reduce the body fat percentage low enough to see the results in your trouble areas. exercising the legs will strengthen the area but it will have no effect on fat loss in that area
