Deseo actually means "Wish" and Quiero means "Want". So you decide when to use what based on what you are trying to say/express.

deseo is much more formal than quiero. actually you normally do not use it to express i want something in regular spanish.
yo wouldn't say deseo un helado, but quiero un helado.

more or less like deseo is wish and quiero is want, do I make any sense?

now deseo is the verb if what you meant is desire in a sexual context. and quiero can also mean love. like in te quiero (i love you)

Deseo really means "Desire" quireo means "want". Quiero is the more common word to use in a regular converstion. Deseo is used in a more formal matter.

quiero (want) comes from the verb querer and means to love or to want and deseo is a noun and means wish so there are differences between them

Deceo is two words, "wish" like "i have a wish" or if u tell someone "te deceo" means "i desired you".

Te quiero, is like " i love you" or "quiero" in the way u want something.

"deseo" is to wish basically like "I wish to have you here tonight"

"quiero" is to want basically like "I want to have you here tongiht"

So bottom line:
"deseo"=wish(sort of)
"quiero"=want
