Go to a shelter! You sound like you want a little and friendly dog. Do not buy one from a pet shop. They can have lots of health problems. At shelters you can look at loads of ADORABLE small dogs and small dog puppies! I wouldnt get a chihahua (no offense to chihahua lovers) because they are hard to take care of and are not good for first time dog owners. I wouldnt try a yorkshire terrier. Never fall for the "miniature yorkshire terriers". They are so small and fragile! They are very susceptible to illness and have many health problems. You should try a bichon frise or a cairn terrier. They are both very nice, easy to teach tricks, and great for first time owners. I used to have a cairn and it was the nicest dog ever. It learned loads of tricks quickly (sit, lie down, roll over, shake, fetch, speak, and to jump over little hurdles.Just go to a shelter and I promise you will find an adorable little dog!

You could get a Chihuahua, Sheltie ( Shetland Sheepdog ), Cairn Terrier, Dachshund, Havanese, Maltese, Papillon, Pomeranian, Miniature Pinscher, Toy Poodle, Scottish Terrier, or a Yorkshire Terrier. I would probably get either the Sheltie, Chihuahua, or the Yorkshire Terrier.

You need to consider the following things:

Do you want a puppy -- or would an adult do? Are you willing to consider a rescue or go to the shelter?

Hair -- do you like to groom? Or would you rather have a smooth coated dog?

Energy -- do you want a couch potato? a busy body? something in between?

Do you have other animals? Cats? Birds? rodents? Children?

Size -- really small --under 10# 10 - 20#

Do you live in an apartment? House with a yard? Are you willing to take long walks to exercise your dog? Are you willing to train your dog?

I train classes for the public and so am exposed to many, many dogs of all sizes. For the smaller dogs I like many of the well bred Beagles, Papillons, Pomeranians, Jack Russells, Dachshunds, Pugs and Boston Terriers. Notice that I said "well bred" ABSOLUTELY avoid a puppy mill/pet store when getting any dog, but especially the smaller breeds.

I would get a Skye Terrier or a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. They are very cute, small, and have gigantic personalities. They aren't yappy like most small dogs. The Skye is a little smaller than the PBGV, at 10 inches high as opposed to 13-15.

There is no such thing as a miniature Yorkshire terror (intentional misspelling)

Yorkies are good dogs but you cannot EVER leave them alone for too long at all. They will destroy everything in order to keep themselves entertained. They are really active and have a very high prey drive.

NOTE: I am not bashing the yorkies...I just have one and I am forewarning you :)

Terriers are really nice dogs especially west highland terriers and cairn terriers (todo from wizard of oz). You just have to socialize them alot because they can be agressive. Another plus is their small too.

I have always liked pugs for a small dog. The one I had would chase a ball all day, loved to swim, just an all around fun dog.

Go to your local animal shelter and adopt a dog! You will be saving a dog's life and will not be contributing to pet overpopulation. If there isn't a small dog available, let them know what you are looking for and they can contact you if a matching dog comes in.

Bishon frise, sheltie(miniature collie), toy or miniature poodle, miniature doberman, terriers, spanials, hounds.
There are a lot of small dogs, but be prepared for them to be yappy, and prone to eyes/nose/&ear infections. Good luck!
