I guess as a black person it's hard for me to understand why someone would be so vain in this way. It's not good for a person's skin to be out on the beach all day, especially if they're white, but yes these are the people that insist on exposing their skin to the sun to get skin cancer, dry their skin out and cause premature aging. :\

Take a look at what Farrah Fawcett looks like now. Extremely wrinkled, leathery and dry. Is that what you wanna look like?

Like Michelle said, people don't think of consequences that aren't immediate. Tanning doesn't have any immediate consequences (burning maybe, but not tanning) so it's deemed as immediate beauty. I'm white and used to do tanning beds until I was diagnosed with cancer at 19. I do like the darker look because I find it looks better on me but now I do a self-tanner that isn't streaky or orange and get the best of both worlds! Can be confident in my skin tone while young and not be worried about the Farrah Fawcett look when older, whoo hoo! I really like the look of all skin colours, and some white women look amazing nice and ivory, but some prefer to be darker. Personal preference when it comes to looks I guess, but you're right about the dangers. It amazes me how many women just don't think twice about their health.

I'm not white, but my husband and all of my in-laws are so I'll attempt to answer this question. I don't think most people, any color, really think about the damage that the sun does to their skin. Getting out in the sun is actually a good thing as long as it's not over done. A lot of white people want a good tan. I'm sure if my skin was pale and white I'd want a tan too!

i am sorry if i will offend anybody with my comment. But what real question should be is why do white people want to roast their skin in the sun for a tan ....to get there skin looking darker but then...some of those same people discriminate against we black people or colored people however you choose to call yourself.
this is what i do not understand. After prolonged hours laying in the sun your skin turned bright red like a lobster, and then after a few days old its gets darker. Now if you look at a light skinned person and a person thet was tanning all day, after a few days they both have the same skin tone.....so why does some ignorant white people discrimanet so much do they not see their own color after being in the sun so long?
Like i said sorry if i offended anyone....i was just curious....

Well I can only speak for Canadians, come summer we're ready to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, because it's only warm for half the year, so we enjoy it.

It also has to do with sunlight making us happy. We don't think about it but we need it. It produces vitamin D for one. But mainly it just makes us happy. Well rather I should say increased sunlight makes us less depressed. It's the opposite of seasonal affective disorder, I think it's called spring fever.

So yeah, the reason is because sunlight makes us happy. It's not people's fault that they're white, or cannot find sunscreen good enough to keep them from burning. But I don't think your skin colour should be the only thing to determine how long you're allowed at the beach.

High Five to you! I am white, but I do not understand people that want to go out and cook themselves so that they can darken their skin. Sure a little bit of a tan is healthy, it shows that you get outdoors, but to cook yourself in a tanning parlor or on the beach is crazy.

You are right, after a while, it looks ugly. I have seen people that look as if they have leather for skin and they are not aware of how bad it looks.

Not only that, but people are endagering their lives with skin cancer.

The fact is that being tan equates to being wealthy. People want to tan to look wealthy, to look like they have been vacationing to expensive beach resorts.

I live in Florida, I'm white, and I haven't been on the beach in 15 years, and there are 3 pools on the property where I reside and I haven't been out there one day to sun since I've lived here. I've been in Florida 23 years and have been on the beach for a tan twice. I have been to the beach to take pictures though of vacationers and for pictures of the scenery.

What I dont get is, Why dont they tan with sunblock on (spf 15-30??) Yopu will still get a tan with sunblock, and I know cuz go to the beach (to swim, not tan) and I still get slightly darker. Also you tan faster in the water. Just use sunblock while u tan and not lay out there until your skin peels, sunclock actually keeps u from getting SUNBURNED... (unles you are in the highest UV)

I guess as people who naturally have more pigment in our skin its something we will never understand. A girl that I work with literally tans on top of sunburn because she says she wants to achieve MY complexion. Once a customer came in and was guessing how old each of us girls are. When he got to her, he guessed that she was 35 (Shes only 24!) That just goes to show what all that UV exposure does to your skin. Its dangerous!
