We call my mother Grandma and my husband's mother Grandma Smith. However we really don't get along with her.
Don't pick something too cutsie. It sounds really goofy in a year or two. Or at college graduation!
The names will become much clearer within a year or so. i wouldn't worry about it sounding too much like ma - ma. You will be "mommy" before you know it. Then "Mom". They get big so fast!

In all honesty, it is usually the choice of the grandparent. This is especially true if there are other grandchildren and the name usually has some sort of family tradtion behind it. So talk to your mother-in-law first. And, while there may be a point in time where your child may pronounce the two names in a similar way, he will never be confused as to who someone is talking about or about who is Ma Ma and whos is Mom-mom!!! Ma Ma will always be the first and favorite!

Just my opinion: I don't think he's going to be confused who his Mama is. Kids are pretty bright. My name sounds remarkably close to mother sounds when young children, nieces and nephews pronounce it and they have never been confused.
But, if it bothers you: One nephew called my mom Nana and his other grandma "Nama"

Hell no. She requested you to name her mother considering the fact that she's secure with you and likes you, that is a well factor. I do not name my sweetheart's mother Mom, however I have witnessed plenty of folks who do.
