About four weeks, unless the insurance policy is contestable.

First, I am sorry for your loss. The claims process for an uncomplicated claim is fairly quick with many companies. Policies that have been in force for less than 2 years or where is a question as to the cause or manner of death, or other complications, can take longer. Go ahead and call the inusrance agent/company to inform them of the claim so they can get started on the processing. Meanwhile, get together the death certificate, a copy of the obituary and anything else the insurance company tells you they need and provide it as soon as possible. I've seen $1 million death claims paid in under a week, though I'd say you're likely looking at under 30 days. Good luck!

Three weeks does sound a little long. They do need to verify everything (Death certificate, policy in good standing, Beneficiary status(es), policy limits, etc) but it should only take 1 to 2 weeks as long as you have all of the paperwork in that they need.

If you have already filed your paperwork, give them a call and verify that they have everything they need. Once they say they have everything, it should be pretty quick. If they have not sent a check within a week of that, give them a call again and try to get a manager. Ask what is taking so long (as nicely as you can, because it does help). Ask if there is anything you can do to help the speed things up.
