I've started walking about 3 miles a day. I eat pretty healthy, drink lots of water, but I was wondering if walking will actually make any difference. I don't mind running, but it's much easier to motivate myself to walk. I'm also walking up and down hills if that makes a difference.

for losing fat walking is a better exercise that running. The best exercises to lose fat are those done at a slow comfortable pace with deep brething. Something that can not be done with running.
Running actually tenses your muscles so you tend to burn sugar rather then fat. Burning fat off taking a long time. Its easier to put it on than to take it off.
When it all comes down to it is simply calories anyway. You can exercise all youwant but if you eat too much you will still be fat. So just watch your calories. Walking three miles a day sounds good to me. You might want to add a little weight to it. LIke walking with some three to five poiun weights.
Now also what burns fat even faster is interval training. Where you wlak for like five minutes then run at a full speed for like ten seconds and then walk slow for five mintues then full spped for ten to twenty seconds. This actually trains your body better than simply running or walking alone.

The key to losing weight is to burn more calories a day then you take in. Walking is a good form of exercise and is a great starting point. I don't know how fast you are walking but a fast walk will burn more calories then just a normal walk.
I dropped 20 lbs by working out about 4-5 days a week and I quit drinking soda. I strictly drinkg water, lemonade, or milk. I started this at the beginning of this year and I am feeling great.
Keep up the walking and cut out the extra calories and that will be a great start.

Each kilogram (2 lbs) of fat contains 3500 kcals of energy.

To burn 3500 kcals you could:
Cycle at 10 mph for 444 minutes
Take a low impact aerobics class for 660 minutes
Run at 6 mph for 266 minutes.

As for walking on the flat at about 2 mph it will take about 1066 minute to shed 1 kilogram. Walking uphill will make a difference it will only take 440 minutes.

So 3 miles of walking per day (assuming this is taking about an hour) will mean that every 12 days you will lose 1 kilogram. This is of course assuming that you are not eating more than you need.

Hope that helps.

Yes, walking about 3 miles a day will burn the same amount of calories as running 3 miles, just take you longer.

cardio 4-6 times a week for 30-50min is what you have to do to lose weight. combine it with light weight training

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

You basically need to burn more calories than you consume. This means that you need to find your Basal Metabolic Rate, which is the amount of calories you burn a day just to maintain life (you would burn this amount if you slept all day and didn't move a muscle) After you determine that you should determine how many calories you burn for each activity that you do. Add your BMR to your calories burned from activity to find your total caloric expenditure. Make sure that you consume less than you burn, and you'll lose weight!

1 pound of fat equals 3500 calories. So if you regulate your eating and exercise so that you burn 500 calories more per day than you consume, you should lose a pound per week. Reach for 1000 calories per day and you should lose two pounds per week. You shouldn't aim for more than this. Two pounds per weeks is safest, and also gives you a better chance of maintaining. Good luck!

just burn more calories than you eat... then you will lose weight. Also, avoid eating too much when you are done walking. That is a mistake many people make.

You need to burn more calories than you eat. That's a way to lose. Try walking further, at a faster pace. And remember, muscle weighs more than fat.
