My daughter is 3 she has known all of her basic colors since she was 2. My sister is 6 and she still doesn't know all of them. It all depends on the child and the time you work with them. Some kids pick things up very easily, others it takes time. I wouldn't be too discouraged about it. Everyday while doing your normal routine point things out to him, such as "Look at that *yellow* bus" or "You can wear your *blue* shirt today* also try coloring with him, and flash cards, that is all I did with my daughter.

Some children are slower learning than others. If you want to help him, get some sheets of paper and draw cartoon like things and color them and make a story out of it. Say for instance " The man got in the purple car and.....make up something" and have the car colored purple, then make him point out the purple car. Thats how I did my 3 1/2 year old. He knows all of his colors except brown and I cant make him comprehend that its brown and not Chocolate.
You can also get a story book if you dont want to make your own and dont read the pages just look at the pictures with him. Say "Look at that pink pig" then ask him what color is the pig. Do 2 or 3 different colors and then go back to the first one. Say "theres that pig what color is it" dont fret if you have to tell him the color 3 or 4 different times. He will gradually pick it up and remember. Try to set aside a certain amount of time each day for learning stuff like that. Best wishes to you.

My oldest daughter knew all her basic colors (red, blue, yellow, green, orange, brown, pink, white, black, purple) by the time her little sister was born when she was 19 months old as well as her basic shapes (circle, triangle, square, heart, star). Some kids don't learn them quite that early, but by 4 years old he should definitely be getting some of them down pat. Just try to casually incorporate it into every day life i.e What color is this truck, Mommy's shirt, etc. It will make life a lot easier as it gets closer to time to start Kindergarten if he already knows some of these things rather than panicking a month before he's supposed to start and trying to cram it all in then.

I would say yes!! But each child learns at a different pace! I had 4 children & they knew colors, counting 1-10 & shapes by like 2. Have you tried yet, or is he having a problem remembering the colors. I don't know if you've tried this already, but say things to him like "look at the blue birdy" or "I like your red shirt", "Do you see anything else in the room that's red?" , etc.... Good luck!

Children do not automatically know things without being taught. A typical 4-year old has cognitive learning skills sufficient to learn to identify colors, if someone takes the opportunity to teach colors.

Many children do not learn all their colors until kindergarten. Try working with your son. Simple stuff - "I like the blue shirt you are wearing". Name the colors when you see them in this manner, but don't force. You will drive your son crazy by constantly saying, "What color is this?".
If however when he is older like 5-6 and can't name them, then you should talk with his teacher about it.
Don't rush him, it will most likely come.

My three children knew their colors by 2 yrs old, even my son.
I have known children who did not care to learn them as early.

I am a preschool teacher and a four year old should be able to recognize the following colors: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, black, white, pink, and gray. If your child does not, perhaps this should be your summer project.

Try not to focus on what he doesn't know, but instead focus on what he does know. Different kids have different interests and thus learn more of that subject.
Your son might be too busy to stop and learn something as "silly" as colours and ABCs, etc. Come on mom! There are cars that need playing with!! He sounds perfectly normal to me!

He should at least know his basic colors like red, blue, green, white, black. BUT, if he hasnt beein in school and if you havent been teaching him tis stuff than he's not going to just know. But if youve been trying to teach him and he's just not getting it, talk to his doctor. he shouldve known them at 2.
