Hi my friend has just text me for help with their PC. My friend said that when he turns the PC on it loads up to the windows logo then the screen goes blue with loads of weird letters and numbers on the screen. He has tried it in safe mode but it wont work. He thinks it is a hardware problem. He hasn't downloaded or deleted anything. It was working fine yesterday. Anyone got any suggestions?

Sounds like "the blue screen of death". Could be either software OR hardware related. If he is not too computer savvy, he may want to take it into a shop. Or, he can just try to re-install Windows.
There are two ways to do so. Re-format, then install a fresh copy, (he will lose anything saved on the drive), or re-install Windows without re-formatting.
Good luck!
Oh, and the Blue Screen of Death affects ALL Windows OS's, NOT just 98!!!

Boot from the OS CD. Go through as if to do an install. When choices come up select repair. Once in the repair prompt run chkdsk on the boot disk. I have done this twice in the past 6 months to 2 different computers and it fixed them both.
good luck.

The dreaded blue screen of death
try starting in safe mode - keep hitting F8 as it loads.
if no luck reinstall windows.
unlikely to be a hardware problem.
Hey Dark Wolf- you mean to say MS have actually helped you decode a blue screen error??? I've never had such luck !!! LOL :-)

If he's tried Safe Mode and other things, he may have to boot from the CD that came with his computer or another Windows System CD. He may even have to reinstall Windows that way.

This is not a Hardware Problem This would be a software problem You will need to reinstall windows for try a repair. Most likely it is missing a DLL file witch is a driver file that could of been caused by spyware or a virus, or just coruption of a file or program... I am computer Tech For CustomPC48809. If you have any other questions please Contact at custompc48809@yahoo.com or at david@custompc48809.com thanks

Wow all those answers and not one says to write down what the BSOD says and check on microsofts website to find out what the problem is. That's what I would as this happens with both software and hardware. If you do find out that it is hardware from the microsoft website, just remove it and find a solution from the manufacturer's website. If it's software, hopefully microsoft will have a step by step guide to fox the problem, but alas, they don't have everything covered in their website, but then again who does?

vix could you supply the error code? I might be able to help you more then.
What does the message say if there is one.
It could be so many things, boot file problems, the file system could be screwed up, hard drive failing the list could go on. If he could give us some more info on what he is getting on the screen, then we maybe able to advise on the course of action.
