I know I'll need several machines -
I want to lose 20 pounds in a year
and get toned - not look like a bulked-up female.

Also, what machines are good for helping you lose weight?

free weights are superior than machines for exciting the metabolic rate. machines only utilize 2 of the 3 plans of motion. for optimum results any resistance training program should be based on free weight training and supplemented with machines

big muscles come from the diet not from the weight used to stimulate them.

Why not take advantage of the in house fitness trainer to assess
you current physical condition and plan out what you should do to get the type of body that you want.

Your membership should entitle you to 1 free visit with the trainer and he/she will be your best resource when deciding on which machines or free weights to use. They will also go over each piece of equipment and explain how to correctly use it.

Although you are usually only given 1 free hour, you can often check with the trainer to get more help as you go along. Usually after 6 months it is worth the customary $60 fee ( or some will work on tips) to get a new evaluation and get a new plan for the next 6 months.

If you can afford it, try to also see the trainer at your 3 month mark. Again sometimes they will help you for free, if they do remember to tip them $10 or $15 and you'll find that they will help you out often.

which machine you use probably is not as important as training intensity and diet. You may want to stick to exercises that involve your whole body, rather than trying to isolate one part at a time. Don't be afraid to use freeweights!!! Keep your reps in the 16-20 range. If your time frame is a year, set smaller goals along the way. Don't quit, don't expect miracles, and train hard.
