I'm just curious. I know a lot of people don't believe in God, but don't always know why.

For the same reason that you don't believe in Zeus, the Tooth Fairy, Santa Clause, pink unicorns, and the flying spaghetti monster. Why don't you believe in Zeus anyway? I mean, I really don't get it. If you believe in your god which makes exactly the same amount of sense as believing in Zeus, then why not believe in Zeus?

Edit: Although, it is kind of bad of me to assume you are a Christian.

Just so I can have a reason for answering this question, because it comes up every hour.

But seriously, I don't believe in God for the same reason why I don't believe in Zeus, Isis, or the Keebler Elves: because I find it to be a waste of time. I already tried the God thing (numerous flavors of theism, in fact), and it doesn't work for me. The world makes much more sense to me when I don't bring notions of powerful invisible men into the picture.

If I'm wrong and God exists, then he certainly shouldn't have a problem with somebody who makes the best with what he was created with, rather than bugging the creator with requests or (even worse) claiming to always speak on his behalf. And if he is really so insecure that he'd demand worship from little creatures, then it still begs the question of which religion is the "right" one. There is absolutely no reason why I should take a Christian's word over a Muslim's word, for that matter a Baptist's word over a Catholic's word. Even then, I wouldn't want to worship an egomaniac.

Because after years of study and deep thought, I discovered that the Bible is a manufactured lie...and so therefore everything in it is also a farce. Religion was created by primitive peoples because of their fear of dying. Religion has been promoted throughout the millenia as a means to control the populace and to make money. Do you really believe that pastors that steal money from poor people believe they will go to hell? Even they don't believe in God or they would be scared to death! What about the pedophilic priests? Do you think they believe in God? It's all about control.

The best way I can answer this is to quote Albert Einstein:

"I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotisms. (Albert Einstein, obituary in New York Times, 19 April 1955)"

Oh, and to v c above: The story of the Russian guy who dug down to hell is completely bogus!

No evidence whatsoever, and plenty of evidence contrary to established religions.

Nobody can prove any gods, much less a specific god, exist; many people will tell you their god exists but no others, but will never be able to prove it, even if they think so. Some will threaten you with eternal pain or promise eternal joy to get you to believe in their god; these are all stories, created for people who were scared long before we understood the universe. Now we have no more reason for these superstitions.

I always try to answer truthfully, but some people just use this forum to put down people who don't believe like they do. That's just rude. (not you, your question is polite) I don't believe because the bible is filled with hate and violence. I don't believe because god killed is son for us. How is that love?. I don't believe because it's believe or go to hell. I don't believe because there is no proof. I don't believe because I can not believe the stories in the bible. I don't believe because a good person goes to hell for not believing. It makes absolutely no sense to me. So I don't believe.

No evidence -- not the slightest bit. No scientist will believe in anything without at least some evidence. Since there is no evidence supporting either the existence or non-existence of god, it provably follows that any theory of god is useless: it can predict nothing. So, why bother?

I don't believe in the God of the religions of the Book because that is nothing but a false depiction of the Creator to justify a hierarchical and patriarchal society.

Religion just never made sense to me. I was raised in an agnostic household but was given the opportunities to go to church. I was sent to a day bible school and given plenty of room to hear the message and make up my own mind. Mom and dad never talked derisively of faith in front of me. But nevertheless I sat there through sermons and lessons, thinking "7 days? Virgin birth? Raising from the dead? Huh?! Why would God need to send down and sacrifice himself to get around a decision... that HE made?!! " From the start, it sounded like complete gibberish to me. I didn't turn against faith because of bad things in the past that Christians did or because I was horribly disillusioned as a teenager.

Because if there is a god, he's an a s s hole for allowing starvation and disease and all the other horrible things in the world. Why are things born only to live a short time in agony and then die? That doesn't make sense to me if there is someone in charge overseeing such a thing, so I can't believe there is such a thing overseeing it all...and if there was, I want no part of it.
