We have always used window fans to keep our home cool during summer months. Now that we have an active toddler we need a safe alternative. Especially for her room which gets hot at night.
Any ideas on how to keep air comming in and circulating while keeping her safe (from falling out the window, getting her fingers stuck in a fan or pulling a fan on herself) would be appreciated!!!

buy a ceiling fan. a box fan to sit in the window would also be good, be sure to stick a stick or something in the window frame (after you have the fan) with the idea that it will hold the fan in place and no one can open the window from outside (if the room is on the ground floor).

i assume central heat and air is not an option. you might try to buy a window air conditioner (less than $100) and put it in your bedroom and move your toddler's bed or at least the mattress to your room and shut the door to keep the cool in the bedroom and not run up the electric bill. This way you all would get a good night's sleep.

you might try keeping the windows covered with something dark to block the sunlight/heat coming in thru the windows. keep the front door closed as much as possible to keep the heat out. it really works. it will make the house stay cooler, longer, throughout the day.

They sell window fans that fit perfectly in a window (so as not to let bugs IN) and have protective "screening" in front so that the child cannot get his or her tiny fingers caught in the fan blades..... If you CAN, try to put both the inner and outter window in the DOWN position so that you could put a fan in the UPPER portion of a window rather then the lower... ALSO, if there are two windows in the room---open both (hopefully screened and or guarded so baby won't fall out of window) so that there will be cross ventilation in the room---ALSO a good idea when using a fan in one window---open another window for better air circulation.... If you can't do that, then I SUGGEST you put the baby in another room that HAS better air circulation and is cooler. .... heat can be a killer....

I just came back from Menards, for the exact same reason. Found an 18 dollar light/ceiling fan (low profile) Now have to go home and make sure the lights the right wattage for the light he currently has up there.

Hopefully my 3 year old wont chuck stuff up at it now.

You should invest in central heat and air. With hepa filters, your air will be cool and clean. And it will boost the value of your home.
Dress her in very cool clothes and use a thin blanket. Put her on her back to sleep. At least put a window unit in her window. You can get one at lowes, walmart or a pawn shop.

Get a ceiling fan. Dress her in light PJ's or let her sleep in her panties. Make sure her bedding is light too.

They sell fans that mount high on the wall and you can point them down or straight out. I believe they sell them at homedepot.
