What matters a lot to me is the actual cost of the vehicle, fuel economy, space for hauling camping or sports equipment (like cross country skiis) around, and how well the car will perform in it's lifespan. Is the Civic a far better car than the Yaris and worth the $3000 - $4000 more than the Yaris? Or is the Yaris as reliable as the Civic?

yes, personally id go with the civic since its been a well respected name for honda for decades. toyota in the other hand i also great but who knows how long that model will last on the market and if it dont cut it, theyll stop making them and the parts will be expensive,. the honda though has been around for decades which makes it like a lego, many parts available and quick and easy cheap to fix...plus u can do many upgrades to it, just watch Fast and the Furious!

There's no way to know yet, because the Yaris is a brand new model. Civics have been around for several years, and have an outstanding track record. Toyota makes fine cars, and I would suspect that any model they introduce would have the same quality engineering and construction as the Camry and Corolla...but there's just no way to know for certain until the Yaris has been around for several years.
Good luck!

The Yaris is a new model so it has no established reliability ratings.

The Civic as a model has been around a long time, and the current hatchback version has been around for several years, they have excellent reliability.

The Civic is a better all around car.

I am a Toyota owner and fan, BUT Yaris has some shortcomings (worst side-accident record, for example). Actually, don't compare Yaris to Civic - the Corolla is the match - the Honda Fit is the Yaris level.... good reviews on it.

The yaris is as reliable, but between the two, I'd choose the Civic.

Get the Civic. I have had many cars over many years. The only car I have owned that has NEVER given me a lick of trouble was my '95 Honda Civic. Not one problem whatsoever.
