We are thinking of buying a used vehicle. Maybe a BMW or Lexus?? Something probably 3 to 6 years old depending on what we can do in price. I have heard you have to get special maintenance on these "previously" expensive vehicles. Can anyone tell me about that? What about repairs.. is it even worth it? We want some of the little luxuries from one of these used vehicles but I don't want to spend $100 for an oil change on a $15,000 car.

Standard Oil changes won't cost anymore than you normal vehicle. Some BMW use in excess of 5qts of oil, so they may charge more if it requires more the 5qts of oil to do the oil change.

The place they get expensive is when a components such as a starter or alternator goes out. However, for routine maintenance it shouldn't cost you any more and you should be fine.

Hi RSF,

Contrary to the other post comments (No offense) some of these luxury vehicles (depending on year model) require the use of synthetic motor oil for oil changes, which will cost you quite a bit more than a standard oil change. As a previous service manager of a BMW dealership our rates were almost $100.00.

That doesn't include other services that may be required. However, some luxury vehicles include maintenance free within the warranty period. Of course if the warranty is expired your own your own.

It's a lot more expensive to diagnose and repair high line vehicles as well. Labor rates are higher and parts are also expensive.

My advice is if your budget doesn't allow for these higher expenses then you may be wise to look at other models that perhaps you could settle for.
