Well its not to be sneezed at!

2007-05-11 07:20:30 · answer #1 · answered by havanadig 6 · 0 2

I don't say anything when someone sneezes (well, maybe ask if they're alright if they're sneezing a lot) and I rarely say thank you when they say "God bless you" to me. It really bothers some people, but I don't see why I should conform to such a silly and needless tradition.

When I'm the only person around and someone sneezes then looks at me expectantly and I don't say "bless you" or "God bless you" sometimes they look like all helpless and confused, even concerned for their well being because they haven't been blessed...! What do they do when they're alone?!

I had to un-teach my kids who were saying it because their teachers insisted they should.

Why would an atheist even say bless you? That expression comes from the belief that your soul can escape your body when you sneeze and could be caught by demons, since the word for sosul comes for the word for breathe.

Athiests generally do not recognize souls and "blessing" is pretty typically a religious function.

The next time you hear an atheist say "Bless you," ask them by whose authority are they granting a blessing.

It bothered me one time when god bless you was said to my GF little cousin and her mother got angry and said "we don't say GOD bless you we only say bless you" I guess because she is an atheist and she wants to force her beliefs on her children.

No not at all...im a christian and i find myself saying bless u all the time. It had nothing to do with god, its just my way of saying it. If u think about where the saying came from it shouldnt even bother u. We have our way of saying things and thet have theirs..its no biggie

I'm a Christian--Lots of people only say Bless you...if you are gonna be offended by every little thing then you must have a horrible life.

I believe in God and if I don't know the person I say "Bless you" because it is not my place to force my views on anybody.

God loves them more!
So why would it bother Christians?

Not really. An atheist asking God to bless me would be kind of an empty oath anyway.

Nope.
I'm blessed regardless, and them saying it and not believing it is of no consequence anyway so why bother...
