Australia is a big place and the weather varies enormously. The wet season is showing signs of starting in northern Australia yet there can still be snow on the Alps. The Bureau of Meteorology has the climate data for the whole of Australia here http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/ you can look at maps of different parameters or check the records for any location.

The weather is hot, however it does depend where in Australia you are, because it might be cooler down in the southern regions, for example.
If you want to know what the season is, technically it's the middle of spring but, it's so hot people just refer to it as being summer.
