intending to marry someone is easy to understand, but why?

It's kinda like marriage purgatory. Before you're engaged, you're alive. Then you get engaged and you're in a holding pattern awaiting your final disposition. You marry the right person and it's "heavenly." The wrong person and, well, you get the idea.

Though I think traditionally it's pre-covenant commitment and allows time to plan the wedding, etc.

I don't understand the question. If you want to marry someone, you HAVE to talk to them about it, and eventually decide to get married. This is what engagement is - the two people decide to get married. Why people want to marry? Could be for love and companionship, for religious or legal reasons, or because everyone else gets married; who knows. Most of the time, I think, it's because you meet someone and say - gosh, I want to marry this person.

You're thinking about it the wrong way. Engagement is not a formal institution the way marriage is; it's just a word to describe the time period between agreeing to get married and the actual marriage (or the breaking off of the agreement to get married).

When two people love eachother they get engaged which is when the man propose to the woman or vise versa. The engagement process will be the lenght of time it takes to get prepared for the weding.

Thats how they do it where I come from.

So they have time to spend planning their lives together and to make sure that it will last. If you just got married the day of you might regret it because you didn't have time to really think it through and plan for the future.

People get engaged because it's promising that you will spend the rest of your life with each other. Also it's taking the relationship to the next level, i.e....house & children.

because an engagment is a prelude to the wedding. It is offering the person you love a committment and asking them to make one to you with the intention of spending the rest of your lives together.

Can't get married without one. Asking someone to marry you THE DAY OF is monstrously inconvenient. :P
