I agree with Barbara B -- let's assume you mean confident.

Some breeds grow slower and become more confident later on. My dog (a full-grown Rottweiler) was terrified of a neighbor's 3 month old French Bulldog puppy, which was pretty hilarious (I didn't torture her about it, didn't force any contact). She would hide behind me like a little child hiding behind his mom's legs. They later became friends who loved playing together.

If your dog's timid in general, allow her to grow more confident through training and activities like Barbara B. said. But be aware that not all dogs -- regardless of breed -- have an active or confident personality. My friend has an Akita mix that is the most mellow and laid back kissy-face dog you'd ever want to meet. Another has a Yorkie who bosses around my Rottie and the Akita, a lab and any other dog around. And in the case of a burglar breaking in to your house, I'd back the Yorkie over any other dog I've ever met.

Let's assume you mean CONFIDENT and not aggressive.

Aggressive dogs are nuisances and socially unacceptable. Confident dogs - that are well socialized and obedient are a joy to be around - and good citizens.

Obedience training is the best. Look for a school/class - socializing is important.

get into a sport like fly ball or obstacle course. They go by height - so your toy Pomeranian doesn't compete with a Great Dane.

But Obedience training is the best.

Good luck.

You want a SOCIALIZED dog NOT and aggressive dog. Please be careful what you ask for around here. You want a dog that is not freaked out by cats or everyday occurences then introduce the pup to new things a little every day. It helps desensitize them to loud noises and new experiences...dog parks...out door cafes...long walks...all sorts of things...A fearful dog is one that will bite in many cases, so start working on it now!
