Poison ivy, poison oak, (and poison sumac) are North American woody plants that grow in almost any habitat.

The three plants are quite similar in appearance. All three have alternating compound leaves of three leaflets, berrylike fruits, and rusty brown stems.

One way to distinguish poison ivy (Rhus radicans) from the others is that it is a vine and climbs on rocks, fences, and high into trees. It has gray-white fruit that is not hairy and its leaves are comprised of three leaflets with bumpy edges. Poison ivy has green flowers.

Poison oak (Rhus toxicodendron) is often shrubby.

The taxonomy of poison ivy and poison oak has been debated among scientists, but most scientists place both of these plants, along with poison sumac in the same genus, and they recognize 5 species: poison sumac, Eastern poison oak, western poison oak, climbing poison ivy and non-climbing poison ivy. The species have different growth forms and they occur in different regions.

They are different plants with different leaf patterns and both give you a heck of a rash.

You can treat by scrubbing with soapy water with clorox.
