As others have mentioned, there was an optional AC unit for the beetle. It bolted another panel below the dashboard for the air and the controls.

Instead of blowing cold, it sucked. (bad joke)

On a hot day, the engine would noticibly drag down when the unit kicked into gear. For a car with a typical top speed of 70 or so on the flats or down hill (unless you put the obligatory sandbags in the front end to help balance out the car).. that power sap was immediately felt as the car would slow more then a bit.

Slowing down was not bad, but also meant that the engine had to work harder and there is more heat to dispurse . That translates to more wear on the unit.

Bottom lines:

1) Yes.. you can put it in
2) It will suck on your engine power
3) It will make the engine work harder - therefore it will wear out faster and require more frequent maint. to help offset the wear.
4) Since the car is not well insulated in the first place, you AC comfort will be short lived.

your choice... good luck either way...

Ive answered this question before, yes it is available. But the real question is wether or not driving a bug is right for you? It is my thought that you are missing, completely, the joy of driving a vintage bug. They are hot, smelly, most are slow, and in a different catagory than most any other car. Its about the simple things in life. You may want to consider a different car if your set on ac. A compressor will cause considerable drag and slow down a already slow car. Keep it simple and enjoy it. Of course this is mostly opinion, but also something to think about.

Yes. Dont listen to the others. As a matter of fact go to the local Books-A-million and find the magazines. In the automobile section there is a mag called "Hot VW's" on the cover is a red bug with a/c and it tells about it. Also there are lots of vendors in there. I am sure any of them can help.

it was an option but it is cramped and puts a lot of strain on the engine , roll the windows down and use the vent windows to direct air where you want it
