It depends on what TYPE of passport you have....and I'm also assuming that you have a British passport.
If it's machine readable, you will not need a visa.
If it is NOT machine readable, you need to get a visa.
Not sure how to describe a machine-readable one but mine was issued in Dec 2000 and is OK, so anything after that certainly will be - anything from before then, I can't say for certain.

If you are a U.K. citizen and have a U.K. passport, no you don't need a visa. However, entry in the country can be denied if the immigration officer suspects something suspicious or deems you as unadmissable. Final decision always lies in the hands of immigration officer(s) in the U.S. and ever country.

Not if you are a British citizen or a citizen of a European country that was part of the E.U. before its recent expansion. But if you have a south Asian or Arabic name or look about you be prepared to be hassled, perhaps so much that it will spoil your visit.

no need if you're staying for a short visit (less than 6 months, I think). You may want to bring your return ticket along as proof of your intentions to return home.
