Im under the impression that it sounds like "grenitch". Is that right?

Correct. and it's How-stin street, not Hew-stun. (as in SoHo, the neighborhood South of Houston, next to the village).

I'm English andGreenwich Village is my favourite part of New York. I never thought to pronounce it as anything other than "Gren-itch" though.

You are absolutely correct! I know how you feel when your not exactly sure if it's Grenitch or Greenwitch. English Language is confusing! I feel Sorry 4 foreigners in the USA! No Offense to anyone!
