God commanded Adam firstly.
Adam no doubt relayed this commandment to his new companion. his god given wife. so Eve tells the serpent what Adam had told her. namely , " See that tree there honey. We'll die if we eat from that particular tree. All the rest are fine. just that one. So ,leave it well alone. Don't even touch it honey. ''
That is god's tree. do not touch.
you will positively not die Eve was told.
And as they had access to the trees of life, how could they ?

Gen 2:17
And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

Gen 3:2-3
The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

The first one is what God said to Adam, and Adam told Eve. The second is what Eve claimed (to the serpent) that God had told them. Eve misquotes God, adding in the bogus instruction that they must not even touch the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Also God said that they could *freely* eat of *all* the trees in the garden. So Eve makes out God to be less generous and more restrictive than He really was.

I don't know why Eve tampered with what God had said, but it perhaps a lesson for us not to change what God has said in case it leads us to be tempted and deceived.

2: 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die."

3:3 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'"

You can not take verse 3 on its own as it is contiguous to verse 2. The difference is that Eve lied in verse 3 by adding to God's word because God did NOT say "neither shall ye touch it lest ye die".

The difference is that in 2:17 the Bible reports the command of God and in 3:3 the woman perverts the word of God.

2:17 was God commandment to Adam.
3:3 was Eve's misquote of the commandment

The Bible accurately records that Eve misquoted the instructions. It shows that Eve did not really understand what God had told Adam. She was treating the fruit as if it was poisonous or something. She did not want to even touch it. But it was not fruit itself that was dangerous, but the ACT of disobedience if they ate it. Had God not placed that tree in the Garden, Adam or Eve would have found something else to disobey God about.

Because she did not understand, and she saw the fruit was actual good - not poisonous, she was tricked into eating it.

Genesis 2:17, God said , but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surley die.

Genesis 3:2, the woman said, you must not eat fruit from the tree in the MIDDLE of the garden and you must not touch it, or you will die.

The tree of life was also in the MIDDLE of the garden. I had not noticed this difference before. Thanks!

The tree of life is now in the city of God. Revelation 22:2

Genesis 2:17 (New International Version)

17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

Genesis 3:3 (New International Version)

3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

It was Eve speaking on both instances. She was clarifying and adding in Chapter 3 that God also said don't touch it.

In Genesis 2:17 The Lord God said (to the Man), "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: But the tree of knowledge of good & evil, you shall not eat of it: For in the day/age that you eat of it you will surely die.

Genesis 3 writes that the serpent said to the woman, "Yeah, Did God say e shall not eat of every tree in the garden?.... The woman answered the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden, but the fruit of the tree in the midst of the garden, God sait to not eat or touch it lest you die.". And the serpent said to the woman, "Ye shall not surely die: For God des know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods knowing good & evil.

In Genesis 2, the Lord told Adam that he would surely die if he ate of it...

In Genesis 3, the Serpent deceived the woman & said that she wouldn't die if she ate of it or touched it.... God didn't say to not touch it. Just to not eat it.

So, one told the conscequences and the serpent said that there wouldn't be conscequences that then they would be made in the image of God... But they were already made in the image of God; body, soul & spirit.

After the fall, the conscequences happened. They were not in the image of God any more in that they died spiritually when denied the tree of life. Then they died physically within an age/ 1000 yrs.

Sorry not going to look it up, but I'd say that 3:3 comes later in the book than 2:17.

There is no difference. Whether you eat or touch, you die. But the clear message is not necessarily the fruit per se, but the"Test for man whether he will oblige or not to the command." It is more on man's ability to obey or disobey.

They were already immortal but were tricked into sin thinking they would become immortal.

Kinda like Pauline Christianity.
