Some veterinarians will accept payments. You could offer collateral. I had a friend that use to leave a shotgun with her veterinarian. He use to comment on how he wished you wouldn't pay, lol.
It is not to late for Care Credit. You can apply for care credit, if your veterinarian accepts it. If he doesn't you will have to find one that does. See if he is on the list. If he is not, ask him if he would sign up. http://www.carecredit.com/
You and your cat will be in our prayers, Good luck!

It's too late for insurance now (I don't have any either). Has there been an ultrasound to determine the size of the tumor and that it is operable? That was around $350 for my cat who had a tumor in his bladder. Surgery to remove the tumor was probably $800 more. Needle biopsies are seldom definitive in determining if tumors are malignant.
Any vet will give you a pretty close estimate of the cost of a surgery so ask.
There is now an organisation called Care Credit which makes loans for veterinary expenses and charge a low interest rate if the loan is paid off within a year.
Does your vet suspect a lymphoma? That apparently creates a rise in calcium levels in a cat's blood. I would think that would be the "probable" cause of the tumor.
I hope this helps somewhat and that you can go ahead to get the tumor removed and a positive diagnosis. If it is lymphoma be sure to join the Yahoo group felinecancer as many people there are treating their cats for this cancer. You can learn a lot from their experiences and receive support as you deal with your sick cat.

How old is the cat? Often the price can't be fully determined until the surgery is complete. If the tumor is encapsulated then it is easy to remove, however if it has spread or is involved with sensitive organs it will be much pricier. Have they done any blod work at this point to check white blood cell levels? Don't panic yet, not all tumors are malignant, and even benign tumors grow. At my clinic we would probably charge about $150-165 for the surgery and any medications. Blood work would probably be another 45. However my clinic is known for being inexpensive so don't use that as your baseline.
Good luck!

Call SEVERAL vets for estimates! Most reputable vets will allow you to pay in installments if you don't have pet insurance. Tumors are usually cancer-caused, if it's just a cyst then it's not as life-threatening. You may want to request a biopsy after the surgery.

Surgery costs vary greatly from practice to practice and area to area. On top of the basic surgery cost, there will also be additionals like pain relief, maybe drips and blood test. You need to ask your vet for a cost estimate. You also need to ask if your vet will accept a payment plan, some do, some don't. Ring around if you don't like what your vet offers.
Your vet is also the best person to ask about possible causes of this. No one knows for sure what causes cancer, it could be a combination of environmental factors and genetic predisposition.

Depending on the vet - a round figure would be $1000. Hopefully the tumor is not malignant and if it is malignant, it hasn't spread.

It would be a whole lot cheaper if you have insurance.
petinsurance.com
It pays for itself. IF you take care of your pet as you should, all the basic check ups and shots are covered to the point that offsets the premium.
