I'm getting a new laptop and probably won't be getting another one for ages so is it better to get the one ahead or just get an xp.

It will be, eventually. It will be much better once the first or second service pack become available from Microsoft. I asked my IT guy at work the same question, and his response was this: If you are going to upgrade your old computer to Vista, it makes more sense to wait until the service packs come out. If you are buying a new computer, just get Vista. It makes more sense, because eventually XP will be phased out, so you'll have to upgrade at some point. Might as well get used to the new system now.

I just got it. It took me a while to get used to, but I really like it. I think it looks awesome, and there's huge potential in it, once all the little tricks get figured out.

Oh, and the government can hack into XP and Vista equally easily, but they're not likely to unless they have a warrant. If they don't, its a violation of privacy. You're not safer from that sort of stuff with XP though - if the government wants in, they'll get in.

No, XP is way better than vista. Before you get vista concider weather you really need it or not, i work in it so i got vista just so that i can play with it so that i have a good idea of the basics of it for if i have to repair a computer that is runnung vista. I was really dissapointed with it, i don't like the start menu, all of the names of the settings in the controll pannel have changed and millions of other things that are too long for me to list here that make it the second worst OS that microsoft has ever createed (worst being windows ME) Do not wsate your money on it

I have now deleted windows vista and happily run windows XP, it is more stablem user friendly and runs faster than vista did, my pc that vista was runnung on more than met the system requirements and it made it run really slow.

yes but you might not like it. There are too many details to list. I would stay with XP for another year (even though I have vista)

If you stay off the internet they can't do anything. The government can get anything they want even though it is illegal. If microsoft opened a hole for them it would have been found by now and microsoft would be out of buisness.

Its all up to you. You will have to deal with it when you buy it. No one knows what programs you are running or how good at computers you are. The one thing to think about is if you ever want to go for vista in the future you will have to pay for it. Truthfully I have really not had any problems with vista at all except for learning new ways of doing things.

I believe Dell has stoped installing VISTA as the main OS. Vista is too new stick with XP and you can always update. Pick an laptop that Vista is offered then get xp. When Vista gets all the bugs worked out then if you want you can switch to Vista..

Why is anybody so shocked that vista is slightly a pig, Australian laptop magazines have been reporting this because of the fact it became in beta late 2006. Now we hear there's a nil.33 provider %. for XP, advert vista would be previous in 2009. which skill they are going to re badge vista and fasten its problems and provide us a clean OS. not!

As a Microsoft re-seller we were given Vista in Jan. In a nutshell its absolutely rubbish. Ive had to back out of 2 installs and gone back to XP. As a re-seller we do not support Vista in its current state. Dell have now backed off Vista as well. Buy your Laptop from them but stipulate XP as your Operating system. Take out the 3 year policy as well. Its always the best option on laptops......

No not yet! Currently I think XP is better than Vista. Because of these reasons-
#(1). Nearly all hardwares and softwares currently supports XP, Vista has got some serious problems with even very common hardwares... I am a victim..it failed, to my surprise, to recognize my Surecom EP-320X-R LAN card which XP recognizes with ease. I also failed to install Nero 7 !?!
#(2). There are better security solutions for XP (I mean from vendors OTHER THAN MICROSOFT); most of the holes of it has been fixed (not all) through the service packs (currently SP-2) but Vista has no service pack (till today). Vista has too many holes that has not been fixed (wait till at least one service pack).
#(3). Vista is very resource hungry, you should at least have 512 M.B. of R.A.M. Not everybody has a new PC or more than 512 M.B. of R.A.M. ; Thats a damn good reason to stick with XP for some time.
#(4). Vista UAC (User Access Control) simply sucks! trust me, XP is much simpler and fun to use.

Well my advise would be to stick with XP until the release of Vista Service Pack-2 (?).
You have my advise.. Haven't You? Decide for yourself.. just wait or crash & burn your PC like HELL!!!
Goodluck.

;)

I have heard that there really is not a lot of difference in layout but have heard of loads of problems with Vista, networking, ante virus software e.t.c. I bought a laptop a couple of months ago and am so glad that I stuck with XP,i was tempted by Vista but wondered about all the XP software I had which is why I finally decided on XP.Hope this helps.

The Windows Vista is heavier than XP and you will need good real 1Gb minimum at least and a good CPU, but I´ve heard that xp is as trackeable as W Vista, mainly because if thay want to do so they can do even with W2000.

Here is what I think....

Some of the security features that Vista offers are better than XP (home or pro).

The networking (ipv6 and samba integration) are better.

Tons of eye candy...

Better support for high end machines (+4GB ram and such)

Quad core processor support (and beyond)

All though all of these things are good and necessary (in the near future), I personally would wait for at least 6 moths to a year and also wait for the first service pack....

Hope I Helped.....
