In my heart I believe that I am not racist.
But, as much as I hate to admit it -- as much as it pains to admit it -- there are times when I'll hold to my purse just a little bit tighter and tense up when I see a group of African Americans or Hispanics nearby.
I hate that I do it...and I'm always so ashamed of myself when I arrive at my destination safe -- and, in fact, never having been in danger -- but I seem to be powerless to stop feeling the way that I do on those occasions.
In the end, despite the fact that I have very dear friends, and a few family members who are black, I suspect that I am a racist.
And I'm ashamed.

I believe racism is instinctual so every one is at some level. As a matter of conscious I am not, as an intelligent and educated person I am not, but faced with somebody from a different culture or different skin colour that I am not used to seeing alot of I can become overly self conscious, uncomfortable and very much aware of their presence. However the same thing happens if someone with a unusual punk hair do comes on the bus, I have an overwhelming urge to stare and take it all in.

Not racist. But I do have an aversion to total idiots of all races, people who do stupid things over and over, and don't really do anything to make the world a better place. That seems to be in all races. But if I meet or see a person who is black, japanese, muslim, white or mexican, that person is not heaped into a general group of all people with that skin type. We are individuals, and that is how I see each and every person I meet.

I try my darndest not to be....
But, in the evening if someone with a hat turned around backwards, baggie jeans and gold chains approach me...I do twinge a little with fear.
Likewise though, if in the evening some bubba with a John Deere hat and Iron Maiden t-shirt on approaches me...I do twinge a little at that too...
Does that make me racist? I hope not.
I only hire people based on their accomplishments, education and experience. However, if during the interview the person shows up in baggie jeans hanging off their butt...or in an iron-maiden t-shirt...I would not hire them either...because, I think that would show a lack of judgement on their part....
Geesh...am I racist?

I am not a racist. Segments of all races, religions, and groups are bad or have ill will. The 90-10 theory...10% of people ruin it for the other 90%.

I believe the definition of racism is hating someone simply because the are different than you, whether religion, race, age, or sex. No I am not racist....my son just happens to be bi-racial!

Everyone has the freedom of choice. As long as there is respect and no prejudice involved.
For example: In any community or group of people you will find yourself chosing who you want to associate with or who to be friends with. No one is REQUIRED to love everybody all the time and no NEEDS to hate everybody all the time. Respect is the key word.
The fact that I am not friendly or dont like Patricia has nothing to do with her ethnic origin, there just isnt anything in common between us. Yet I get on very well with Jenny exactly the same ethnic origin. Note I have not mentioned what is my or their ethnic origin?
Some of us dont even get on with some members of our own family, as long as we live and let live it will be just fine.
Justice to all.

Like a few people said already, its not a matter of discriminating against the colour of someone's skin, its more a dislike of certain attitudes prevalent in certain cultures, eg: the 'gangsta rapper' image, etc.
Judging someone solely on the colour of their skin is just plain silly.
cheers

I know better than to prejudge someone based on race, but it's tough not to judge people on culture. Africans are awesome...African American ghetto/rap culture is full of bad ideas and attitudes, I think, and that makes me something-ist. I'm not proud, but I'm usually honest.
