I'm trying to figure out how long it may take me to finish my first triathlon. I have lots of time to train (the race isn't until September) and I'm confident I can get into quite good shape.
What times do you think I can realistically hope to beat for each segment?

1/2 mile swim: 30 minutes?
4 mile run: 45-60 minutes?
18 mile bike: 60 minutes?

Let me know what you think!

Think of your first race as a learning experience. You shouldn't be very concerned with your times but a good way to see how well your training is going is to get the results from last year's race, find people in your age/gender group and check out their times. Usually you can find the results online, if not, ask the race organizers to email you a copy. That'll give you the fastest and slowest as well as everything in between. Sometimes they have a special category for first-timers, you could check those times too.

It also depends on your strengths/weaknesses. And don't forget your transitions! If you're a strong runner or swimmer take that into consideration. Also allow for wind, water temps, currents, etc. In all honesty don't focus too much on your times the first go. Get used to the sport, work on your transitions and pay attention to your nutrition. You should walk away from your first race with a laundry list of thing you can improve on. That's what makes it so addictive ( =

Good luck!!!
