Yes, we can. And the disciples and the apostles are different, I think.

The change was after the resurrection. They were disciples when Christ was hear teaching and showing them the way. The became Apostles when they were teaching and showing others the way through Christ.

Disciples are students. They were made apostles, once Jesus gave the great commision. An apostle is "one who is sent".
The great commision sent the apostles into all nations to preach the Gospel of Christ, so that men may be saved.

Disciples->Apostles is as Law->Another Law.
That's why God chose Saul to become Paul.
"Paul The Apostle": "his witness unto all men";
"all men" includes the twelve were a hung jury.
Christ said: my kingdom is NOT of "this world".
Law Law can't full fill, being a tree short of forest.
Have ye not heard the exhortation of Bible Translators:
It is preposterous order to teach first and learn afterward.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

The Apostles didn't choose to be Apostles... it was Christ who chose them.
Luke 6:13
John 6:70
John 15:16
We can choose to fallow Christ but not become Apostles.

Disciple in greek means student. Apostle in greek means "sent one". So when a Disciple of Jesus was "sent out" to preach the Gosple they became an Apostle "a sent one of Jesus". Sure we can be messengers of Jesus but not like the Apostles in the Bible. The text in the Bible refering to Apostles refers to those who literally knew Jesus on earth and were commanded by him while he was in the Physical form. Now Paul had a revelatory appearance from Christ and he became a "sent one" but I seriously doubt that happens now.

Apostle means messenger. They became the first messengers of the Word. There are many Apostles in the world today. Jackie Pullinger, Reinhardt Bonke and Billy Graham are just 3.

I've always thought they were disciples before Christ's crucifixion and apostles after. I have no scholarly basis for this opinion, except I might have learned it in Sunday School, long ago.
