The interesting thing about Mormons is that they started the first American religion. All other religions at the time were a branch off of the Catholics. Now their church can be found all the way across the world. This was a vision that Joseph Smith had that is in our history record. Joseph Smith said that one day the religion would encircle the whole world. At the time he shared the vision there were less then a hundred members. Amazing.

Currently there are more members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints outside the United States than in.
You can check out the stats page on the church website for numbers by country here: http://www.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=d10511154963d010VgnVCM1000004e94610aRCRD
edit - for Gef - missionaries pay their own way (we do not have any paid clergy), you can also look at the stats page to see how much funding goes into humanitarian efforts.
Thanks

There are Mormon churches all over the place, I still can't work out why they still send American people here (aus) to be missionaries when we have mormons here, what a waste of money they could be giving to the needy

It started in America when Joseph Smith would not or could not accept spiritual truths of his day and so he started his own cult by telling the myth of golden plates coming down from heaven and thus giving him the freedom to write and say whatever he wanted in the name of God. Mormons are not the only ones who have done this and there will be more cults cropping up off and on as the years go by.
