Hebrews 5:12-14 says once you're weaned you should start discerning (avoiding) what's both good and evil: the law; as if being weaned from milk is when you should start eating meat.

Which (law/grace) things are an "allegory": Galatians 4

It seems to dovetail with Pauline Epistles about putting away childish things (laws) to be man kind (grace us).

Discerning is knowing the difference. So know the difference between good and evil.

I think you need to look up discernment again.
...
definition of discern:
1 a : to detect with the eyes b : to detect with senses other than vision
2 : to recognize or identify as separate and distinct : DISCRIMINATE
3 : to come to know or recognize mentally
intransitive verb : to see or understand the difference

So it's not saying to "avoid" both good and evil - it's saying through time you're going to learn right from wrong. You're going to be able to tell the difference and categorize each decision or action you take as such - one or the other. No middle ground. If you let other people make you decisions for you, it's like you are a baby - drinking milk. When you should try to grow up and make your own decisions - eat the real food.

i go with what the others have said. look at the meaning of discernment in the dictionary. this text (Hebrews 5:14) pertains to people who have just welcomed God in their life. They grow more mature in spirituality by the help of the Christian community but they should also start to learn how to listen to God's voice, discerning good and evil so that they will do the GOOD and avoid the EVIL.

Spiritual discernment, to know what is of God and what is not of God.

I pray for this all the time, for I always want to have spiritual discernment....there are many things in this world that people would not see as "evil" or as "good" and it is only God who reveals the truth to us through His Holy Spirit! We should always be aware of what is of God and what is not of God.
