Glasgow is great for eating out, art galleries and architecture if you are interested.

The best advice I could give would be to get to Inverness, then hire a vehicle, preferably a Landrover ( great for off roading ), a camper or a car, head up the North East coast towards John O' Groats, then head west towards Durness ( you will then be in the county of Sutherland which is Europe's last remaining wilderness ) then head down the south west coast towards Ullapool and the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, you could even pop on the ferry from Lochaline to The Isle of Mull. The scenery on this trip will truly take your breath away. Just one thing be careful on the roads as many of them are single track with passing places, also make sure you have plenty of fuel and food as petrol stations and shops are very few and far between. Have fun.

Try to visit Glasgow and Edinburgh, they both have great sites to see and, equally important, friendly folk. Make a big effort to travel up the west coast for fantastic scenery and,if you can, visit Orkney--even a day trip over the John o'Groats ferry gives some time to see the isles, and the friendliest folk on earth! Whatever you do I'm sure you'll enjoy our great wee country
and if I can help in any way just send an e-mail.
Hope you have a wonderful time.

Iv'e either got double vision , or I just answered this question!

It's liable to be cold and wet in October, though you could be surprised!! It depends where you want to start and end, but if you were arriving in Edinburgh, you should spend a couple of days there, then head for the west coast, perhaps via Glencoe to Fort William/Inverness/ and back down the A9 via Aviemore and the Whisky Trail to Edinburgh again. Check the SYHA website if you want hostels, though some may be closed at that time.
