I want to propose marriage.....but I have no idea what kind of engagement ring she wants, so how does a guy who knows nothing about rings buy an engagement ring? How about proposing marriage, then we both go to diamond stores and find a ring? I plan to spend between $ 1,200 and $ 2,600 or so for the ring.

I also have no idea of her ring size. She lives a 4 hour drive away from me, so it's hard to find out what kind of jewelry she likes

Personally, I will be picking out my own ring. I would want to do it myself. Perhaps you can buy her a nice non-diamond ring to propose with and then go shopping together after. Or, you could ask her mother or grandmother if they have a ring that you could use for the proposal. I know my mother has her original wedding set that she doesn't wear anymore that a suitor could use.

Dude save your money and buy her a big ole ring you will be happy you did. After all it is a reflection of you. Plus she will be overwhelmed with joy, she's happy u will be happy
I think you need to spend at least 5K and get at least 1 carat, as far as the size goes just guess. the jewerry store will size it for free if need be. It may even be a good Idea to mention a web site that sells rings and ask her to show you what she likes, she will still be surprised, by the way, she proly already knows you are wanting to propose, women are smart like that.

The next time you are together ask her what size she wears. The price range your in she will be more than happy with the ring. Pick out the ring yourself and don't mention it to the family because she is adult enough to make her own decisions. Just slide one of your rings on her finger and say gee your fingers are small what size do you wear anyways. She is one lucky gal. The person at the jewelry store will help you that's what they are trained for.

I would not have had a problem with my husband proposing without a ring and shopping for one together. If you want to surprise her with a ring get her a simple and pretty engagement ring and pick out a wedding band that will spice it up together. Good Luck!

Yes, I would go for the practical approach. Propose to her and tell her there and then that if she says yes, you will take her to pick a ring of her choice ranging from $1,200 and $2,600. Let her know your budget so as to avoid any embarrassment if she picks a more expensive one.

I just purchased this ring for my girlfriend...

Tiffany's is world known and what girl wouldn't want a Tiffany's ring.
I spent $2800 plus tax.... I didn't wait for her to pick something out.. I don't think thats right anyways.. Its us giving the ring, it should be what we like.
This particular ring is classy and looks so hot on her...
I asked her over dinner at a great restaurant before we went to a Gwen Stepani concert this week...
I'm a happy guy... good luck with your..

Talk to some family members of hers. I'm sure she's worn rings around them. They'll have a clue as to gold, white gold, silver, etc... My hubby saw by my rings that I like yellow gold, so that's what he got. As for sizing, I think a 7.5 is about average. But it 's better to get one a tad larger because it's cheaper to have altered if it's not her size rather than having to add to it.
Good luck man, you're so sweet!

Does she wear any other rings? If you don't know what size ring she wears (I dont even know what size ring I wear) - do this....
take a ring she wears, and put it on your finger (fourth or pinkie) and mark how far down it goes. Go home and measure and voila...approximate ring size. I think I saw this on bluenile.com once under proposal ideas?

I would suggest talking to a friend or sister of your future fiance. They probably have talked about what she wants, and if not, the friend will probably do the research for you.
On the other hand, my brother got engaged just by handing loose diamonds to his betrothed, which they later had put into a nice setting.
