There really isn't much that you can get from any religion that you can't from some self-help book somewhere.

So why do people flock to religion?

They like the social scene, the sense of belonging...

Because it is more familiar, if not more reliable, than a self-help book chosen on the spur of the moment from among dozens of others on the same topic in a bookstore filled with other distractions.

But why people flock to religion is not to get self help, nor really anything to do with so-called "reality TV." It's about the social contact with others who have similar beliefs to your own, or at least profess similar beliefs. It is extending the network, so that you buy your car from a guy from your church, you offer a discount to the guy you have seen at the synagogue, or have coffee and conversation with the one you met at the mosque. Why do you think the yellow pages has a little fish symbol people can put on their ads? Buy from a brother! (Oh, good shepherd, fleece my sheep?)

I don't see the contradiction. Surely the more religious you are, the more you're into self-help books and reality TV, though probably not the internet. I think that the same people are flocking to both.

The phenomenon to be explained is "flocking".

The Internet is still quite new... many people in the world don't have access (known as digital divide), many people prefer to believe what they are taught and for most people they are just born into religion.

Don't worry, there are many non religious people but they don't feel the need to shout or fight about their understanding as most religions have done in the old ages of history.

Because the self help books, internet, reality TV, whatever, don't fill the void, emptiness people have at their core.

There is something missing when you seek to self-satisfy. It never works for long.

If people are seeking religion rather than a personal relationship with God...then I would have to agree with you. It would be as much use to them as would the other things you mentioned. However, is it not a foolish person who seeks wisdom from his equals? How could any man's idea be superior to any other man's idea? We are all equals. Only God is superior.

I agree with you on the religion part, but if people only knew the authority we have over things. The power of what we speak is extraordinary.

Well, one thing for certain that all of those items will not do for you is keep you from spending an eternity in Hell.

I would think that is a good enough reason.

Man's wisdom is no comparison to God's wisdom.
