he is 36mths old. he understands us totally, does what we tell him to, says lots of words, forms two-word sentences, but not a complete proper sentence. should i be worried? i, as a baby, didnt say a word till the age of 3, so could it be genetic?though he is much advanced than what i was as a baby.should i show him to a doctor? a speech therapist maybe? as this not being able to form sentences leave him totally frustrated as well pretty often which makes him go mad.

At 36 months, or 3 years old a child should be able to form sentences. If you have concerns call the local school district office and ask for a speech evaluation. At age 3, the school is resonsible for any special educations sevices, such as speech therapy, a child needs. You can address it with your doctor if you like, but many parents complain to me that their child's doctor always said that the child was fine and not to worry, and it ended up delaying them getting the help their child needed. I would go straight to the school district and have the evaluation.

I have a 3 and a half year old and he is hardly building sentences. I understand almost everything he says and he understands me perfectly. I was worried at first but children' stages of development do vary and I would not be too worried about it if I were you. Do see a therapist to ease your worries, I have a six year old whose speech was delayed as well but there was nothing wrong with him and now you couldn't stop him. The stages of development are just a guideline and they differ from child to child. I wish you well.

Children develop at different rates, it can depend on different factors such as:
1) Does he socialise much-pre-school, parent and toddlers etc? Maybe him being around others his age will help him to form sentences, communicate to others outside of family.
2) Does he have a dummy, use bottle? The strength of the lips and tongue affect speech-try blowign exercises-blowing bubbles through straw in drink, bath, make bubble prints etc. Also sing songs which include sounds such as old macdonalds as it encourgaes different mouth movements.

If you are concerned then speak to ur health visitor as the waiting list for speech therapists is often long! They will be able to give you more tips and see your child. They may suggest looking up MAKATON-its a signing system for children which gives children with diffculties in speech a way to communicate needs (signs are simple such as drink=pretending to hold cup and put to mouth) but also promote sounds represtning words.

Hi,
If your that worried...take him to see a doctor and ease your mind at the same time too...all baby's are different in the way they develope speech...some are slower at picking up sentences than others, and the frustration part is him showing you he's trying...try some positive re-enforcing or make a game of making sentences with him...and smile lots..this will make him happy and ease both of your frustrations...

Good luck,
Babs
