Some critics are not so much opposed to capital punishment in principal, as they are to the time it takes for it to be carried out. However, they know that speeding up the process will guarantee the execution of an innocent person.

(Note: of the 123 people released from death row with evidence of their innocence, many had already served a decade or more.)

I agree with brandylynn - leave out "for so long" or change it to "indefinitely".
