If you take the Northeast Cooridor NJ transit the round trip is <$20 and takes about 1 1/2 hours.

Do you mean Trenton. NJ (There is a train from NYC)

If you actually mean Trenton, NY, you would take a train to Utica, NY. Trenton is less than 10 miles from the Utica train station.

When you checked train tix, did you just check AMTRAK, or did you also check NJ Transit (I believe this might be your cheapest option)

Just take NJ Transit, it's a straight shot from NYC Penn Sta. to Trenton, fast, and cheap.
